I am looking into a new tow rig and have found a 94 ford turbo diesel that I like. I don't like the front axle, but the engine seems to run strong and the price is right. Are these decent motors or should I get something else. Not set on one particular brand or fuel. I am looking at gas and diesel engines.

The IDI engines are good solid engines. Some think better than the Powerstroke.

I will be looking for one of these as a donor for my Bronco in a couple of months!

They may be good engines, but they are SLOW when pulling something heavy. Unless you add a turbo....

I bought my 94 turbo diesel in 1996 with 50k miles i sold it a few years ago to SLCSR5 with alittle over 100k miles. I only used it for towing the toys, The auto trany was changed @ 85k, and i updated the turbo and exhaust, turned up the fuel and boost about the same time, it is lacking in power compared the newer ps, my brother had a 99 ps the motors felt the same, they produced the power in the same rpm range, but he was always going 10mph faster.
good solid truck and motor, i replaced it with an 04 cummins and love the power but i miss the ford badly.

I currently have that same truck (inspired by the years of riding in ricsrx's truck) I do not have the upgraded turbo or exhaust, and I wish I did. I am not a fan of the auto trani. I usually pull about 40-45 up most canyon roads or mountain passes pulling about 7-8k lbs. I really enjoy my truck, but it does not do the same as the PS. It doesn't even touch the 97 cummins my bro drives.
I would repurchase my truck over and over again. (just add manual trani)

SUPER CHEESY
There was a thread somewhere on here where someone stated that the 94 1/2 IDI 7.3 turbo had more power than the first powerstroke but Ford downplayed the numbers so they could sell the powerstrokes.

I know you can't believe everything you read on the internet, but can you believe everything you read on RME?

I have never owned one or spent that much time with one. That is my disclaimer. :) From what I know about them is that they are very simple and durable motors. They seem to run forever. They dont enjoy the same amount of aftermarket support that the powerstroke does. If you are wanting to make big power look at a different truck. I have also read that ford downplayed the power numbers with the release of the the powerstroke.
Yes the dana 50 sucks. I have heard lots of horror story's with that front end. I guess I have been lucky with mine. But on the bright side a dana 60 swap is easy.
