Price Hike

I went up AF Canyon last night for a family cookout and had my 3 bucks in hand at the booth when I was informed that it's now $6 for the 3 day pass. The year pass also went up to $45.
What's the deal? Double?

does suck... but at the same time, be glad you have canyons to access ;)

Alt. options are cookouts at public parks for free... Or compare the cost to taking the family out to a movie, or dinner.. or dinner and a movie.. :)

I'm sure the FS is paying for gas just like everyone else, they're funds suck already, so they increased the entrance fee.

what do i know though, really?

PS... I hope you went for the $45 year pass.. 8 visits and it's paid for itself

I generally do get the year pass and was hoping to still be able to get it for $25. Oh well.
I'll always use the Canyon, I'm just whining about the price hike...

The year pass is good for all state parks isn't it?

Should be. I'm fine with the price hike, part of me wishes it would go up even more. I believe that we've had this discussion before, but if it were $15-$20 for a three day pass, I think that it would reduce traffic in the canyon and perhaps keep some of the more irresponsible people out.

I think in one of the other posts about this subject it was mentioned that the yearly pass is also good for mirror lake highway as well.. so you get twice the enjoyment for your $45

While I agree about keeping the riffraff out, I don't see that being a good resolution. I don't agree with charging responsible people more for that reason alone... where would it stop?

AF is a strange place for me though... I'm not used to big beautiful canyons that are filled with that many people.

They need more money to keep up with the use of the canyon plain and simple. Even though I don't like the idea of spending $45 on an annual pass, it is necessary to keep the canyon open and functioning.

And there is the hope that the increase will decrease traffic, but I doubt it. You would burn more than $45 extra in gas for 1 trip to a similar canyon.

The pass is also good for the Mirror Lake Highway Area (I know, that is hardly worth the increase), but it is not good for state parks. State parks are managed by the State of Utah...the Forest Service is a branch of the Federal Government.

An annual state park pass is $75...

I am going to look into the America the Beautiful pass...for $80 you get access to the fee areas managed by the National Park Service, the BLM, the Forest Service, Fish and Wildlife Service, and Reclamation.

My only concern is with American Fork Canyon being part of the Fee Demonstration Program that it wouldn't be covered...

It is. This is the pass I always buy. Before it was called the Golden Eagle pass (standard $50 park pass plus the Golden Eagle sticker). Now it's just a single pass for everything. Works on all FS fee demo programs.

I don't have the time to respond to this properly. But this is still America, isn't it?

 What does this being America have to do with the price of entrance into the canyon?

I'm glad they raised it, I think it wouldn't hurt to have it even a little higher. I think they may not make as much money having the higher entrance fee but I think that the people up there will be prone to being a bit more responsible making the overall maintenance fees for the canyon much lower.

I'm going to point out a flaw in your statement... you're assuming that most people have that type of common sense. :D

Yesterday (last night to me) SRN's Statememt sounded A little socialist to me.

I could be making more out of it than it really is though.
I really don't care what they charge. I'm going up there two or three times a year for day trips, if it's three bucks or fifty bucks.

Would anyone wish it to be $75.00 for a three day pass? SRN?
When is enough enough?
The price hike woud make me all warm and fuzzy if they could throw some sort of law enforcement in there to POLICE the riff raff.

Today, yes $75 would be too much, sometime in the future(10-15 years, maybe sooner???), it may not be out of the question. Whatever it takes to keep our canyons open, and keep our public lands public, works for me.

If you think about it, $75 for three days, so $25 a day. That's cheaper than almost anything I can do around here for a day of entertainment. If you go to the movies, by the time you buy a couple tickets maybe some popcorn and you're well above $25. Go to dinner, unless it's Burger King, it's well above $25. These are all things lasting maybe a couple hours. A full day of entertainment is worth $25 to me easily.

$75.00 for three days is not keeping our public lands public.

$25.00 for one day of entertainment is a very good deal, until you add the price for everything else. I can do the Swell for free and enjoy it way more than an over used canyon on the wasatch front.
That's just me though.:-\
