Private Health Insurance

What private health insurance providers are you self-employed types using out there? What can you recommend? I'm looking for something that has a decent deductible, low or 0% coinsurance, and good providers. What plans have you gone with that have been good? What horror stories do you have to tell?

I will have to dig through the files, if we still have the stuff. There were a couple we considered, of course good coverage w/kids is a whole different story. If I can find anything I'll bring it Thursday.

I think the best we found in our limited search was like $600/mo and $1000 deductible for surgery, $10-15 copay for office visits and meds. (family of 4, and me w/some "high-risk" BS on my lifestyle sheets hahahah )

I'm trying to stay below $300/month, and it looks like that shouldn't be too hard for a single white guy who rarely gets sick. The last time I was sick, I called my doctor and he had been retired for 3 years.

Kurt mentioned his private insurance awhile ago, Blue Cross for himself (and Candice?) and was paying a few hundred a month.

We are a family of four and are in excellent health with very healthy families to our credit and we still can't afford health insurance. I had completely written off insurance as an option due to being self employed, but then I was introduced to Aflac. It's like additional insurance that can be purchased a la carte. I really like the fact that it's not considered true health insurance so you don't have to tell a doctor you have it, therefore still being able to set up a payment plan. We have the accident policy only and that covers any kind of well, accident. You submit your claim and they send you a check in 10 days. Quite handy and they even paid for all the chiropractic care last winter when Chris threw out his back dancing at a wedding reception! :)

My wife and I have SelectHealth for our family insurance. After having nearly $750 taken out of my check through my employer for BCBS of Wyoming, we needed to find something else. For about $470 per month for a family of four is the best we could do. BCBS of wyoming was utterly useless in Utah and every single bill was sent back to us with a "Not Covered" stamp. There is nothing worse than paying double after shelling out $750 per month and then being forced to pay 100% of every visit. SelectHealth is $15 copay and super low deductable (can't remember how much). Basically an office visit on BCBS was $60 upfront then the over inflated bill for $300+. On SelectHealth, the same visit is $15 and that is it! Make two or three visits a month for a infant and a toddler and the SelectHealth makes great sense. FAWK BCBS. They are the most useless a55hats on the planet.

I have BCBS for an individual plan. It is catastrophic coverage, $5,000 deductible.

My brother in law works for SEBS who is the local group that works with them. I will get you his number on Thursday.

That's probably about what I'm going to go for. Something like that. I don't go to the doctor enough to need a bunch of regular coverage, but I do worry about breaking a bone or something that would put me out of action.

Fell off the couch eh? That hurts;)

Actually, I had an abcess the size of freakin' two golf balls on my inner thigh (a not so convenient place). I got it fixed up at IHC Instacare for 160 bucks, but it got me thinking about getting some insurance. By the way, I found out that abcesses hurt, and it hurts even more to get one fixed.

That is what I had it for as well. I kept it after my diagnosis just as backup. I never use it but if for some reason Jess looses her job I will need the coverage. I pay $126 a month. I have never made a claim for my MS on it so that should be the rate for the average 34 yr old male.
