Pulling doubles good or bad?.

I joined so I can see the dang photos!

Pulling Doubles..good or bad? was the title...well, that depends on the operator son, if your gut says 'this feels iffy' then it probably is.

properly set up and braked it is not an issue, there are folks I have been behind on 24 that were so out of control with a truck and 16 foot flatbed trailer that I pulled over to get them the hell away from me.

Seen a few in Moab that I don't think I would trust on a bicycle if it involved ringing the bell and steering at the same time.

If you look close you will see the left turn signal on as my buddy is about to pass some jackass doing 45 on I 70, hidden by the sign when my co-pilot snapped the photo is a grossly overloaded SUV with a pack of stickers on it and some wooly looking kids in it, all on over inflated 33's wildly wandering around white line to white line.

Statistically accidents with doubles can't even make a drop in the bucket compared to kids turned loose on the highways with zip for experience driving.

I am planning the exact same setup in your picture. Trailer and boat size look almost identical.

How do you like that setup, how does it tow, and how fast do you typically tow?

That is how I'd like to tow a camp trailer and my buggy on a trailer. I think if set up correctly it would be fine.

Hey Bart, got a pic of Stan's setup? Put a popup over the goose! Customs steps the double as the ramps. Team Fred also has a nice set up with a slid in on a Goose.

Anyone now the legal lenth of a trailer?

Ya get a ticket in this state for doubles on the bumpers.

If you run a 5th or goose in the middle, make sure it is heavier that the last trailer and wire all the trailers for break, and know how to use them.

The law in Utah is that you can pull doubles as long as total length is not over 65'. Double bumper pull is legal here. I think you can legally do over 65' if you pay for a permit. I know in AZ though the first trailer has to be 5th wheel.

I don't have a pic of Stan's rig, but I know there are a few floating around. Very nice, well thought out system. Even his cute lil girls handled the ramp/steps amazingly well.

I'm in the same boat. :)

There are some really cool 5th wheel flat beds out there that would accept some type of pop-up camper mounted onto the front end. I always thought about doing something like that, but the I'd have to move camp to every trail and you'd have to park with a really long trailer.
How about building a platform above a standard flatbed trailer that has a tent trailer permanently mounted? Like a stacker trailer. Mount it toward the front just high enough for your hood to fit under it. You would have to upgrade axles and start with a small tent trailer, but you would have a compact setup.

Now that's a good idea. Make it removable so the trailer remains versatile.

When I get near one of these I speed up and get in front.I don't want to be anywhere around them. Most don't pay attention and ussually driveing to fast for the set up.The legal speed in CO. is 70MPH when pulling any trailer on the interstate.

I called UHP about pulling double bumper-pull today. It is legal in Utah. As long as your weight ratings are not exceeded and your overall vehicle length is 65' or less.

You also want your heavier trailer to be the front trailer in your tow setup.

If you are longer than 65 feet you can go down to the dot and get an oversized permit I have one and am legal up to 100 feet and 16 feet wide it like 200 bucks for the year. I have pulled triples plenty of times. I use to pull a 32ft camper with 22ft baot behind it all bumper pull with a 3/4 ton dodge.

You might have a hard time finding someone like a shop do this for you due to safety reasons. You will have better luck asking a skilled non-professional for assistance. There are several skilled fabricators and welders on this board that might help you out.

Actually, the trailer place at the point of the mountain added a frame mount hitch on my fifth wheel last year. If I remember, it cost me less than $400.

Adding a trailer hitch to a fifthwheel is common. Adding a trailer hitch to the rear of a ball mounted car hauler is not nor is it advisable.

I agree. I've seen people do it successfully and tow that way but I would never do it. Too dangerous!
