PVC Inserts on H1 wheels.....(THEY ARE A PAIN TO INSTALL)....any good experiences????

OK, I fought my with a 38" SX and a big piece of PVC for about 90 minutes last night and lost. I used about half a bottle of dish soap on the bead and the insert.

What are people using for leverage, what are they pushing against, etc.?

Will tire 'lube' stuff help that much more than dish soap?

Should I heat the tires up with my space heater or ????

PBB doesn't seem to be the resource it once was with all the 'do a search' thread responses.......(if you search you come up with about 10-20 threads and most, just say ...."Search"---gay)..... I think Harkinoff's running H1's but am not sure what his beadlocks are. Anyone else?

What would happen of you cut them in half? They looked awefully wide when I saw them, and they would certainly be easier to put in if they were narrower. The slide over the wheels, and it's a fairly snug fit, right? So it wouldn't hurt anything if there were two of them in there side by side, would it?

Hmmm......valid question, good logic......definitely something to think about.

I'm running the two piece pvc, they are a pain as well. I read some installation's from John 351c, If I remember right on PBB? they talked about soap and such and that it was a job...
Are you getting closer to finally wheeling?

Getting closer, just not sure how much....:D TBI 350/700 are in place, still need to fab up/pirate (I noticed I have an old XJ one that could work pretty well.....kind of scary) a crossmember, decide on a case (241 is quick/easy, D300 is cooler, but needs some $$$ to make it right-$$$$ in short supply at this point), wire things up, install some seats, fuel tank, radiator, steering arms/linkage/box/column, solidify my cage, build some fenders/rocksliders/rear bumper and see how 'Novaesque' I still look (I might need to change springs in the rear) with some weight in the back, winch and install some lockers.......

....right around the corner.....D:

For some reason the Interco tires have a slightly thicker bead. However my inserts from Jon351C fit very snug on my 39.5 IROK's. I was able to get three of them seated the first time then the fourth one took three tries to get it to hold air. They have been holding air for over a year now. I would double check the width of the inserts just to make sure it is uniform all the way around. The other thing I ran into was getting the insert to fit uniformly around the rim. Try equally spaced pieces of cardboard between the insert and the rim. It will help you ensure they are going on properly.

yes, heat your tires up...I know when I mount those tires, I had to let them sit in the hot sumer sun for several hours before I could get them on my Trail Readys I had. Once they were nice and warm they popped right on...however this same thing did not work for my Iroks...it took me more than 4 hours to get a single tire mounted then I said screw it and took the other three to get mounted...:D

I get it now, you're having trouble getting the insert inside the tire??? I used a ratchet strap in a warm garage. I ratchetted the insert so it looked like an oval. Then you just push the insert in and when the straps get to the bead you just let them slide off. Getting the insert inside the tire was never a problem. It was always getting the two piece rims together with the extra thick beads.

Yep......Thanks for the tip......I believe I have some ratchet straps around somewhere......:D Are you using the 'civilian' H1 inserts?

I am using the PVC inserts from Stazworks. AKA John351C on PBB. There were only two other ptions for the inserts, the magnesium runflats and the rubber runflats. I didn't want to look for either and John351C had five laying around the shop ;)

That's kind of what I ran into except with 66CJDean (PBB)......I'll see if I can 'collapse' the blue PVC and see what I come up with. THANKS!!!! (I might need someone the size of your brother to stretch the beads on the tires :D )

not to hijack your thread but how much does a set of four of these (rims with run flats) usually cost? and is there anywhere other than (pbb) to get them?

I got mine to settle a debt. About $50 per rim without the insert. John351c sells inserts for $50 a piece. I guess USA6X6 sells that stuff too, but Daniel has garnered a bad rep. in 4x4 world. John is a chatty guy and will talk to anyone. He is good people and super diligent on shipping and correspondence. This is starting to sound like an Ebay comment. He definately sells all kind of military surplus and he has some other really slick parts for 9"s. Stazworks
