I'm scared for you because of the show! That made it ok for teen girls to expect it. I thought it was creepy that the girls were such brats and Mom and Dad just threw them a party for being raunchy.

My Dad owned 3 car dealerships at the time I turned 16 and I didn't get anything like a car. I don't remember being bummed. I could catch a ride anywhere I needed. He did help me get into one and let me borrow his when I went on a date.

Getting her a car is one thing. Maintaining it, insuring it and having the liability is a lot to manage.

Parties are very memorable and can be done on the cheap! If she isn't a party type I do remember going snowboarding with my dad for birthdays and that was rad even though a car wasn't there wrapped in a bow

That being said there are some cheap wheels out there, KSL is your friend!

JDUB'S WIFE'S OPINION: I wouldn't let him post this without adding my two cents! This is the only topic on this forum I've ever known anything about! I'm a 24 year old girl so it hasn't been too long since my days.
You can't go wrong with 16 roses! Send her to the mall to get a new outfit for her big day. A gift certificate so she and a friend or two could go out to dinner. I always liked it if my parents gave me concert/event tickets to take a friend(s) to for my birthday. I think it spared them worrying about us trashing the house or something. If your daughter said she isn't expecting much and is honest with you usually in her expectations she probably isn't expecting much. But every girl would love to be surprised on their sweet 16! Good Luck!

JDUB'S Wife-there are some good suggestions. I'll have to look and see what concerts are coming to town. She loves going to concerts, and has a collection of tickets to shows she's been to. I haven't allowed her to any shows without an adult, but I think 16 is getting up there.

Unfortuneately, a car at this point is out of the question. She lives with her mother, and a car would be a tool for her mother to cause much grief. If (when) she comes to live with me, then a car will be more of a reality.

Just make sure she knows that girls shouldn't crowd surf! Then you're good, even though the concert could be a couple weeks off it will add to the anticipation and celebration.

At the time my daughter turned 16, I was working out of state and was going to miss her actual birthday. So the Saturday before, I took her to dinner (at a really nice place), and then took her Swing dancing. I'm not very good, which made her look better on the floor... Anyway, sappy stuff off....
