What are the proper steps to go through when selling a handgun? I have a Ruger 9mm I've been wanting to replace, and was thinking of trying to sell it, rather than trading it in. Legal issues? Thanks for your advise.

$250. It's a Ruger P89DC. It's in great condition, and comes with a carrying case and 2 high capacity clips (15 rds each). Also have a shoulder holster that I could throw in (I'm too fat for it anymore:D )

Your not going to be able to sell it legally, I suggest you give it to me :D A lot of people only sell to CCP holders, but you’d probably have good luck at next weekends Gun show.

well i would just post it on ksl.com then when you find a buyer make sure they have utah id and are over 21. make a bill of sale and be sure to include their id number so if it ever comes back to you you have proof of sale. alot of people will only sell to conceled carry permit holders but it will take longer seeing as the p89 isn't really a compact

You don't need anything other than to sell it to someone over 21.. Keep a bill of sale with a photocopy of their ID for your own protection. If you sell at the Gunshow you may also get raped as prices are usualy low there.

not really, I know more than a few who carry fullsize handguns as a CC.

i realize this seeing as i have a ruger p94 all i was saying is that if it were a compact sig, hk or xd it would be sold with in a couple hours and that he would probably get better response if he didnt require ccp. either way he cant get in trouble as long as he has all their info it cant come back on him

when I sold mine, I made up a letter that I had the person sign and also took down thier drivers license #.

As long as you don't knowingly sell it to someone who shouldn't have it you are fine. Which means that you have to check thier id and make sure they are a resident and of legal age (21 for handguns and 18 for rifles and shotguns)
I don't sell guns, but if I did I would check thier id, make a copy of it, take a picture of them holding the gun and make them sign a bill of sale.
most people with ccp will be looking for compact though

People tend to own more than one gun ;) I've had a conceled permit for 6 years now and the smallest non .22 handgun I have is a 92F

Gun shows rocked up until the mid 90's, now they are a joke. You can get better deals at Cabella's

I've always bought and sold guns at the gun shows, although it’s usually from other people like me wandering around. Hang a sign on your back with your gun info and price :D

If you are really concerned about avoiding any and all liability that may go along with selling a gun to a person who should not have it you could just go to a gun store and complete the transaction there. The gun store would charge the person the $7 (or whatever it is now) fee and do a background check before you transfer it to them.

There are multiple reasons even persons with a valid driver license cannot own a gun, so I would go to a gun store if I did not know them REAL well.
