I need to rebuild the Q-jet on my 460 (yeah i know,, ford product+gm product=not running) I have never tried to rebuild one of these before, is it something that is do-able for the home mechanic? Or do I pony up and have it done for me?

Ok, also after looking at summits catalog I can get a rebuild Q-jet from summit for 280.00, or a stage 2 q-jet from Jet performance that will increase power for about 360.00. Thoughts?

Try the vavoline carb cleaner from walmart it's about $8 run it on a half a tank. if it doesn't work you'll have to tear it down.

Stumbles on accel, starves for fuel at higher RPM/loads, runs REALLY rich, poor MPG

Typical Q-jet. Run the truck avenger, it rocks my commando. Keep in mind that the holley is Not a bolt on. There are some mods that have to be done so it runs good with your set up.

I got a holly that came off a 460. nothing wrong with it, it's yours for $75.00 if you want it. ( if i can find it)
Came off a 87 motorhome i no longer own.

Otherwise I say rebuilt the Q-jet, or take it to Carbarator Xchange (I think there still around).
They should swap you out for around a $100. I'd guess.
