Question about a starter

So it's time to fire up the new engine (5.3) in my jeep.

I connect all the wires just right and give the solenoid 12v an just get a click.... hook up the charger and get a slow half crank before it stops.
I've checked all the connections and cleaned and brushed them down to shiny bare metal. I've tried two different batteries will full charges and doesn't seem to make a difference. Even tried a new starter and same story.

Could this be my leads? They look clean with zero corrosion so I haven't bothered to try new ones. Any other ideas? Maybe the motor needs oil in the spark plugs? I've rotated it by hand and it turns stiff just as every other motor I've tried.

What trans are you running chris? Almost sounds like your converter isn’t fully seated in the trans and it’s causing it to bind. We ran into this same problem with a buddy’s rig a few years back...

4L60e, IIRC.... and if the above it the case, make CERTAIN that the torque convertor is fully seated. When you slide it in place, it will drop down twice, engaging the pump. If it's not fully seated, it'll destroy the convertor.

It usually destroys the pump in the trans as well so if this is the case have the pump at least looked at.

4l60E, I may need to pull the trans to double check this. I seated the TC in the trans, mated the trans to the engine, then bolted it to the fly wheel while turning the motor over by hand with a large wrench. Sound correct?

I do remember when I was mating the trans and engine it wasn't initially seated fully and I couldn't get the mating surfaces to touch. I reinstalled the torque converter and then I had about 1/4" space between the torque converter and the fly wheel that I had to pull it back to get them to mate up.

I spoke with Calvin and he recommended to unbolt the TC from the flex plate and push it back, then see if the motor turns. I went to unbolt it but when I went to turn the wrench the motor turned with less than say 10 lbs of force so I would guess that's not my issue. I'm going to replace the battery leads and see if that fixes the problem. I've been scratching my head thinking that can't be it since my leads look great, no corrosion anything that would lead me to think that would be it.

Ok....figured it out....I'm a little embarrassed to admit that it was a dead battery.....actually two dead batteries. Both of the batteries on my shelf were low I guess.

Anyway, now it fires but only runs for a split second. Any thoughts on why that might be?

Anyway, now it fires but only runs for a split second. Any thoughts on why that might be?

Yeah. It's still a little weird. I've charged both batteries and neither have enough juice to turn the motor. One is an optima the other is a Napa and both are fairly new. The only way I've gotten it to turn is with two batteries and a charger hooked up. I'm going to get get a new optima today and see how it does.

Also, the motor just fires over once, doesn't stay running. Any thoughts on why that might be?
