i want to pick up a good welder so i went looking online today and found something that kind of peak my intrestest even more.since i live in a apartment/townhome complex i have a garage but i do not have access to 230 other then the wash room.i would like a 230 if i can get it but need to work with 115 right now.

how does this Miller strick you?

it uses both 115 and 230 .it is a bite pricey but for the option to go both ways is it worth it.i guess thats the question.

this portable version was the first one i found but it cost even more .would be nice to own but for that price i have my ready welder

edit:looking around i have found the first one for 1,100 else were

Both awesome welders but that price is high. Airgas is doing the 4x4 show and big sale this Friday and we will have all Miller machines the DVI price is $1,033.36 and the passport is $1,356.72

oh i figured it was less then what they list it as on their own site.like i said i have found it online for 1,000 .i really just want to know how good of a quality weld the first one would put out in 115 and then going over to 230.i know 230 would be best but like i said right now i'm kind of limited.

I bought my Miller DVI from Jake and like it alot. I have used it with both supply voltages, 110 works well for the thin stuff and 220 is much better for the thick stuff. If you want to come try it out you are welcome to stop on by my place and give it a try.

I think the inverter has a nicer arc. If you need a 110volt machine why not get the cheapest one you can find and save the rest for when you have a 240 plug in your garage?

badger, wiring up a 220 is not all that bad, the only thing that would be an issue is where your panel is in conjunction to the garage and how hard the actual run to the garage would be.

I ran a 100 amp sub panel to my garage then ran the 220 off of that, and run 2/3 wire was the hardest part, man that is some thick wire.

I would be willing to come look at it with you if you would like to see what you are up against.

because most rentals won't allow you to add a 220 service (if its a rental).

my opinion on the machine is this...it's an awful lot for a 180 machine. I bought my MM175 (same basic specs with only 220V service) for $600 out the door brand new. I know you can find them all day long for $700-$750 but you still have the same problem. This machine may be a compromise but you are still paying basically what you can get a MM210 for. If you do what bobdog said and get a 110V welder you will be into it more than if you just bought this machine (assuming $300+ for a 110V machine and $700+ for a 180 machine) but you'd have two machines for different tasks. (110V machines are small enough to be a little portable, especially with a generator.)

It's a tough decision but I'd say get one or the other, not a combo of both.

ya knowing how to run the electric isn't the problem.its that i live in an apartment complex that is set up like townhomes.it not something i own.another reason i like the dual purpose of the 115~230 is because you never know you might need to bring it somewhere .is that somewhere going to have a 230 for getting the better weld or is there only going to be 110 or a generator around.i basically only want it to build something here and there and it should cover what i want no problem from what i understand.i like Miller and just wasn't sure about how well this could throw a bead with the dual invertor

I did not even know that the town homes were rentals, and a lot of people I run into will not touch electrical so you never know.

I thought only the apartments over there were rentals and had no idea that the townhomes were as well.

I live within walking distance of your place, if you need 220 on occassion let me know.

reading your post further I see that the apartments are townhomes in disguise.
