I just purchased a 4" lift for my XJ and they say I can only run 32x11.5 tires ............................. This just a safety thing or could I run some 33's

you can fit 33 it will just make you rub or not flex as well. the 33 could also take up the room in your wheel whale. you can always go smaller rims too. just make sure they will support

I would strongly suggest against the 33s with only a 4" on an XJ...you will rub big time and prolly tear you fenders up...I have 32s on mine and it has about 5" of lift and it still rubs big time...

Even with a 6 inch lift, my brother has minimal rubbing. Nothing hardcore but it does hit the front of his rear fender flares

hes running 33" Procomp Xtr on the 6" lift

32's is all I would go with on a 4". If you are looking to run 33's I would suggest at least a 6". IMO XJs don't even look good until about 6" of lift. Even with a 4 they still look stock. Fender trimming would be somewhat extensive to stuff 33's into a 4" kit. If I were you I would take back your new kit and upgrade to somehting bigger, if bigger is what you are looking for.

You could grab a BB kit from Mepco, they're cheap and will get you up to six. Even then, you'll want to cut some to fitt them. With 33's, you'll have to be carefull not to break your weeny shafts, and if you're anything like me you're still going to suffer from inchitis and want more.
What kind of kit did you get by the way?

I am not near your point yet but here are my observations that you need to take into account

You can rub in four basic ways
1 top: rubbing on the top of the fender
-trim outer fender/more lift/reduce flex

2side: rubbing on the inboard side of the fender well
-off set rims/reduce flex/more lift

3front/back: rubbing on the forward and aft end of the well
-trim front and back of fender/reduce flex/more lift

4suspension: rubbing on control arms, springs, steering components, etc...
-special LCA's/offset wheels

ways to avoid rubbing:
1. More lift

2. Trim fenders

3. reduce flex
a. sway bar
b. bump stop drop

Taking these factors into account I could build an xj with 31's and 8 inches of lift that rub's like a dog (super flexy). I could also make 32's fit a stock cherokee (drop bump stops).

Botom line: Build it to do what you want and take everything into account:)

Good point.
My motto, get the tire you want and make it fit. Never limit flex and cut clean.
