I've got a '92 Toyota Ex Cab Pickup and recently wrecked my transfer case after about 4 days straight of crawling in 4LO. At least I think it's the transfer case. A mechanic in Green River thought that's what it is. I'm getting a bunch of clicking :-\ and chattering underneath when I drive - and a couple of times it has even 'clunked' when reversing. I know, a bunch of strange sounds to try to describe in a post.
Anyway, I'm hoping to get another mechanic's opinion on what it might be before I take it apart.
Here's my question, if it is the t-case: what's a good solution to fix/replace the transfer case?
a). replace with a used stock transfer case (found one for under $50).
b). replace only the broken gears & bearings (cost ??). With this option is it possible to modify with lower gearing?
c). do a full rebuild (cost ??). Or buy a rebuilt one.
d). put in a Marlin t case ($800 - $2000). Not sure which one to go with.
Any suggestions? Anything I missed in my considerations?
Also - here's part of the factor: I'm thinking about selling this truck sometime soon so that I can get into a Landcruiser for more family-friendly expeditions.
