What model of transfer case did 1984 XJ Cherokee's have when it was referred to as "Selec-trac?" Also, what was unique about it compared to later models?-_-

one small mod at a time
New Process model #229 transfer case
With 208 transfer case
New Process model #228 transfer case
New Process model #207 transfer case
New Process model #219 Quadra-trac
With 218 transfer case

I am gonna go with 228 as that is similar to the 229 that I have (I believe) and mine is Selec-trac as well.

I believe that it didn't have shft on the fly capability.
(course I am basing that off of an 8? [maybe 4, maybe 6, hell maybe even 7-I dunno] that I had for a week)

Only had the thing for a week, masking tape beige exterior and interior and the 2.8 were enough reason to flush it for me.

229 is what I had...full time was one option on it, since it did have a viscous couplar. No part time Hi range option like the 242....

Still not quite the answer I was looking for. It's more unique than that. Keep going

All the transfer cases used on the Cherokee were chain driven with aluminum housings.

1984-1987 New Process NP207 "Command-Trac", part-time only, 2.61:1 ratio with low range
1984-1987 New Process NP228/NP229 "Selec-Trac", full-time/part-time
1987-2001 New Process NP231 "Command-Trac", part-time only, 2.72:1 ratio with low range
1987-2001 New Process NP242 "Selec-Trac", full-time/part-time, 2.72:1 ratio with low range

Also, what was unique about it compared to later models?-_-

According to John Meister, XJ and FSJ guru, the 229 had HIGHER gearing: 2.61:1, same as the Command Trac.

So what's unique about it?

i know the Comanches sported the Aisin AX4 (four-speed), AX5 and AX15 (five-speed overdrive) manual transmissions, along with the AW4 four-speed automatic that was used beginning in 1987....
