Rattle Snake Constrictor Snow run 01/01/2009

So what were conditions like out there?

Slushy snow at 5MP. Not bad, it made easy stuff more interesting. No deep snow though. In fact, that amount of snow at 5MP is about perfect for making the place challenging.

The only deep snow was on a little road right by the Chevron where the guys pulled off first. In fact, the only stuck of the day was where I tried to pass a stocker rig by going through a crusty snow bank and got stuck. The "experts" on scene scoffed at me when I said I wasn't aired down enough. And I wasn't...I was still running 20ish (??) cuz my gauge was wrong, it said 10 but my tires weren't bulging. After a while I dropped to 6...still no bulge. Later in the day I tried a different gauge and discovered I was still at 15. By that time we had already gone up Rattlesnake and were headed home.

Anyway, after everyone bailed, we (Stranger in his truggy and Driller on his 4x4 quad) went up the road a few miles. The snow got deeper and we had a pretty good time until we couldn't go anymore. I let Stranger break trail for a minute but he couldn't maintain momentum. I took over but we got to a point where I could only go a length or two and stop. I could back up and go another length, and so on. I did that for a few lengths and then it became pointless. Since we were just screwing around and weren't trying to get somewhere, we turned around rather than chaining up.

The IROK's were *ok*. Better than my worn SX's, but not better than the SX's new or with the same amount of tread...but they were also at 15-20 psi vs the 8-10 I ran the SX's at, so I'll have to wait until I get the pressure dialed in. They are bigger, so I'm hoping for an advantage in really deep snow. Part of me is wishing for Hartwig's BAJA CLAWS. The Big Horn guys sure like them (of course I found that out after I bought the IROKs).

That truck did GREAT!!! I was very impressed all day long.

So who were the others that showed up, and where did they go after that first stuck?

Awesome, thanks a ton. It makes me feel good about the purchase. That giant green Jeep is one of the coolest ive seen. I'd like to see how it does in the dry since it was unstoppable in the snow.
