is there a good place local to pick one up? I am looking for one for my boy who has been saving his money. what kind should I look for and what price should I expect him to pay?

couple hundred for a used one. 300 should get you started on a new one. West Valley Hobby is the best place for crawlers.

I bought my son a Maxstone 10 for Christmas. $124.99 and it's been alot of fun. Nice thing is that axial parts fit them. Here's where I bought his http://www.nitrorcx.com/51c872-maxstone10-green-24ghz.html . Cheaper than any others that I could find new and I figured even if I had to fix/upgrade some parts it would still be a good deal.

Yes, we have. Broke a front axle shaft, but replaced it with an Axial shaft ($15 for a pair) and other than that its been awesome. Thinking of picking one up for myself.

My son and I have had as much fun fixing/modifying/planning upgrades as we have had actually driving it.

I also have the maxstone 10...I put a some comp tires on it...messed with the suspension a little bit, added a lipo battary and some wheel weights and it does really really well. Ton's of fun to play with...also would recommend!!

if you were to buy one again would you stick with the 1/10 scale or would you go with the 1/8 scale

I'd still stick with the 1/10. When we were at KOH we hooked them to our backpack, jumped on the 50's and road to the rocks with them. They are more fun because just little rocks due...you don't have to go find the big stuff. Plus parts for the 1/10 are more readily available.

Also a thing to consider...with the 1/8 there are 2 motors....battary drains twice as fast.

I dont know what 1/8 your referring too with 2 motors, but you battery wont drain twice as fast with 2 motors. I could see it doing it with a NiMH battery, but if you went to a Lipo, your batteries last probably close to 1-2 hours depending on how you use your rig.

I had many many many RC crawlers, and my favorite had tt bed the Enroute Bergs. LOTS of fun, but also very spendy. I competed with mine, so the berg was probably the best for comps. Now it is probably a toss-up between the bergs, and the new Axial XR10.
