Toyota Rear leaf bushing outer shell removal

How to remove outer shell to install polyurethane bushings? Hammer and chisel takin very long.
Pls. Help.

Torch!
Not acetylene, But a smaller berns-o-matic type, Make sure you do it in a well ventilated area.
Just to make sure we are talking about the spring eye bushing right?

I have found that removing the outer shell is easiest with a trimmed down sawzall blade to fit.. (on old IH Scouts the bushings are not very big).. but as soon as you can get a single cut in it then you can use a punch and a big hammer and out it will come

Ok, old rubber is gone, now its metal shell needs to go.

So cut a slit in the metal shell and pound away?

I just dealt with that on saturday. Chisel and a hammer for me. Took 2 hours for both metal sleeves. A huge pain. But meach gave me these instructions:

OK... step by step:

1) Spray the bejeezus out of the bushing with lithium grease. (Drilling some small holes in the bushing next to the spring wrap and then spraying the grease in would be a good choice.
2) Set the spring up on something that is the size of the spring wrap. (I used a big vice, or a 1 1/4" socket.)
3) If the bushing has a steel inner sleeve, drive it out with a punch.
4) Put a smaller deep socket or a bar smaller than the diameter of the bushing at its narrowest point on top of the spring.
5) Pound away on the socket/bar until your arms fall off, or the bushing comes out.

It's just the outer sleeve stuck in the spring eye? The slit-with-sawzall method is by FAR the easiest. One slice, the sleeve can collapse on itself and comes right out. 5 minutes each.

Yep.. just like Ilean said.. bout 5 minutes once you get the slit in there

I prefer a pneumatic chisel but what ILean said works as well.
