Recovery gear test session (feeler thread)

I've been wanting to do another snow run but.....
I want to do something a bit more extreme.
During our snow run yesterday Dave mentioned he would like to try out some traction mats he had made. Id like to try out my chains and of course my winch hardly gets used.

Would anybody be interested in a day to test your recovery gear ????

This is not a trail run . Strictly for the hard core.[emoji83]
I know of a perfect location to test winches, chains, traction aids.

This would probably be in the next few weeks. Next weekend I'll be doing some parts swapping, so any weekend after it will work.

I'm down, if a snow day lines up with a day off. I'll bring the F150 and you all can really give your recovery gear a workout. :)

I need to spool my winch. I'd like to rig up a Hi Lift for winching too, I know the theory but I've never done it for real.

Have you got your winch mounted yet ?
I'd like to try out the hi-lift also. Would be great if winch was already in use and needed a side pull.
I also built a pullpall. Need to test that.

I'm in. The next two weekends are spoken for, but after that I'm free.

^ I dig that. I REALLY dig Kurt's idea of having the main beam double as your HiLift handle.

Here's my pullpall.
I went with a bigger 16"row crop sweep with wider fins to hold better.
Like others I didn't feel comfortable getting my hi-lift all muddy.

Hi Lift beams can bend pretty easily. I tried to use one as a lever/pry bar once and was pretty surprised at how easily it bent.

Mine got bent by a ratchet strap on the roof before ever being used. Seems like something billed as 'Xtreme' shouldn't do that; makes me nervous about using it when it really counts.

Here's a few:

They could be customized to nearly any size. I can get them in large sheets and cut to spec.

Here is the site of the "name brand" version:
http://www.muputrax.com.au

Read anywhere online and they have amazing reviews. They're versatile and incredibly strong (see .PDF).

Anyone else interested?

I'm interested. How cheaply can you get them cut out? I'd like to test a pair to destruction, but not if they're going to cost too much. :D

Put me down for a pair.

Could even put some bolts through it for even more traction.[emoji106]

Sorry guys. Long day at work. A couple other links for info:

http://expeditionportal.com/buyers-guide-traction-mats/

http://www.okoffroad.com/stuff-waffleboards.htm

As yoiu can see there's nothing really out there for less than $200/pair. I'm thinking $75/pair is fair and just enough to compensate for time after buying, transporting, and cutting the material. The rest of the week is nuts for me, but I can realistically get some done by Sunday if you're interested.

Let me know.

Lol...I've been thinking the same thing about bolts, maybe even with unistrut for increased strength. Great minds think alike!
