registration after swap

the rules are this: Any vehicle produced from 1984-present, you can only swap in a motor that was originally offered in that particular vehicle. So your only legal swap options are the 4.0 or the 2.5. I know this from personal experience.

I believe the rules are diffrent in SLC & Utah Counties.

When I put the SBC in my CJ, I was told that you could swap in any motor that was the same year or newer. You had to retain all the emissions equipment & the vehicle had to pass emissions requirements for the vehicles year.

But, that was about 5 yrs ago. I don't know if things have changed. I'd look into it further by calling the Utah County motor vehicles dept.

Greg, that is also correct, about the age of the engine, but it is illegal to swap an engine that wsn't available for your vehicle from the factory.

.

OTOH, there is a LEGAL way to get around this, that doesn't include moving. ;)

What is OTO and what is the legal way to get around it?
New vehical model?
Like Mudslides motors 2004. Jeep rubicon whith a LT1.
so what is the catch on that
I have seen Tjs with v10s and all sorts of motors that are regestered and the scorpin and all those avalanche engineering rigs are regestered as 2000 and up vehicles acording to Top truck challange vehical information reports

Mudslides, we are talking Utah here. This is a Utah State law. If you happen to own a vehicle that has had an illegal swap performed on it, then you must first make sure all the smog equipment is in place from the donor rig(which still has to be the same age or newer than the donatee) then you take it to a State Agency that will first, give you a lecture about how it is illegal, then they will test your vehicle, and if it passes the smog for your vehicle's year, they give you a certificate saying you are clear.

I will have to get this address from my brother and post it tomorrow. It is in South Salt lake City.

Basically, it is illegal to DO the swap, but it is not illegal to OWN a vehicle that has had this swap done to it.;)

The one for Utah Co is in Spanish Fork. Been there, done that.

well Im already registered in Colorado now and there is no safety inspection and very lenant on their emissions if your not in the Denver area so maybe I'll just register it in Grand Junction. they dont care as long as they get their money. if that fails i also have adresses in Kansas and again they dont care what you do as long as it's not a hazard.

There is also a law that says when you establish residence in utah you have ten days to have your vehicle registered in the state of utah. Yes I know this first hand. The cop can impound your vehicle(if he/she feels pissy).

how do they know ho long you have been in the state ? I have been back for 7 months with no problems and Brad Yates was here for about 6 months I think wiht Georgia plates and no problems.

Last time I was pulled over for out of state plates (Oregon plates in Utah) He said it doesn't really matter what your drivers license says, they look at where the insurance card is registered at... so if you license your car in Oregon and have it onsured through Oregon, there is nothing they can do.....

That was the law the last time I looked at a swap... same year or newer with all the mandated SMOG parts for that year.

84' and older, do what you want, including legally desomg your junk. :D

Where did you look? The rules for salt lake county are posted on the county dept of heath web site. They dont say anything about newer engines. They say that 83 and older only have to pass a sniff test and 84 and later have to pass visual and sniff. They go on to say that only engines offered in that particular year and make are acceptable. They also mention the certification by the county but say that this is not an option anymore and that no new swaps will be certified.

Just looked on SLVHD website...

10.3.5 If a 1984 and newer vehicle has an engine other than the original, the vehicle owner must demonstrate to the Director that the emission control systems on that engine are equally or more effective in controlling emissions as those systems originally manufactured on the vehicle before a Certification of Compliance is issued.

So all it has to do is be equal or better than original... 84' and older, do what you want...

Reading a little closer... If the swap is other than the original dispacement, it will be labeled as "tampered" and follw the tampered rules... but no where on their site do they discuss the tampered rules...

Tampered fails . You need to read 10.3.3 it is what kills us. you had to take advantage 13 years ago.
