Its official, the 2009 Relic Run will take place Friday June 26th through Monday June 29th. The Relic Run will begin at the Golden Spike National Historic Site and camping at the Spiral Jetty on Friday. Saturday's plans will take participants around the north end of the Great Salt Lake through abandoned towns and historic sites before heading south through the Hogup Mountains. Participants staying through Monday will then head towards the Newfoundland Mountains and the world-famous Sun Tunnels before heading home.

The Relic Run is a vehicle-assisted overland expedition organized as a throwback to the older days of motorized backcountry travel. Participants in the Relic Run are required to operate in the spirit of 4x4 exploration in the 1970’s. Only 1970’s and older vehicles, only 1970’s and older camping gear, and only 1970’s and older route finding. There will be allowances for modified updated vehicles, and every peice of your camping gear doesn't need to be a relic... but the fun of the event is doing the best you can to be as authentic as possible. Start digging out your old Coleman white gas appliances and flannel shirts

Please refer to the website for FAQ's and the applications. Thanks!

Very excited about this untill I read 70's vehicle. I have wanted to go out to the spiral jetty for some time now. I'll just have to go with the semi relic bunch. I never thought of my Blazer as being too new...

Too new for us ;)

We are doing our best to keep the spirit of the idea in tact, thus there will be no allowances for newer vehicles. Mods to vehicles, clothing, camping gear, etc... we can be flexible. But the rigs need to be a relic :D

There are a couple of guys (SAMI) talking about pitching in on a $1000 Scout or pickup truck so they can go, worst case you buy one, do some tuning up an sell it for what you paid after the event. We might change the them a bit for next year, could be 80's, could be 60's, we'll see how our inaugural event turns out :D

Old with a facelift!

Will you be checking registrations? My 74 pickup has a 90 front clip. Looks way newer than it really is.

Update: We are all full.

Keep an eye out for a post trip report in a magazine near you :D

PS, we'll have small Relic Run display at the upcoming Teraflex show this weekend, stop by and say hello and reminisce about your old Coleman stove.

Bummer.

IF you weren't full, and IF I wouldn't be at the cabin anyway, I would argue that the heart of my rig is '74 blaza! Same tranny and t-case (probably the same fluid). In addition...the sheetmetal was designed in '53 and updated in '76. For years it has been identified at the Zone as a '78 K20...

You kids have fun now!

Brett, if your interested in coming it would be great to have you. Submit an application as I'm sure there will be a couple that can't make it!

I'm honored and super interested, but...and it's a big BUTT, the 2nd "IF" listed above is taking priority. I've only got 7 Saturdays left until the FINAL extension on my contruction loan is up, and due to the wet spring and recent storms, I've still got about 14 saturdays of stuff to do.

The inside got behind yet another day because the 10-wheeler delivery truck for the trim/doors/shelf material was stuck in the mud, and I didn't get the call 'til noon...and by the time I could get there it had dried up a little and he rocked himself out and was just finishing up. Oh well, my son and I got 2 hours in on the deck before it started to rain again. We'll see if the painters can really squeeze 4 days into 3.

So will next year be open to 1980 vehicles? If that's the case my k5 should be done just in time for me to participate in 5 yaers, it's an 84:)

That is a very good question, we very well may open it up to a year newer vehicle each year, or we may set the date back further, totally up in the air.

You'll be hearing more about this years run in the coming weeks, lets just say it was an absolute blast from start to finish!
