Ring and Pinion

If you wanted to go with lower gears from a 3.73 and know that either your carrier had to be changed out or you would need the thicker gears, which would you choose?

Also, when you install a locker, do you have to have a certain ring and pinion or are they supplied? I am talking about a ARB or Detroit.

Thanks.

Give us some more info. What axles are you talking about here, and you currently have 3.73 gears, but what do you want to change to. Both ARB and Detriots will replace your carrier anyways, so maybe you are worried about something that you don't need to worry about. And gears are not included with a locker, it will be a seperate purchase unless you found a package price or something.

There are ratio splits on most carries....9", toys, other drop out styles do not. But Your Dana axle do. So yes, you want to consider ration before you buy a locker. It is better to get the macthed carrier and ratio. Thick gears are not a problem, but you will be limitted in ratios avalaible, and may not be able to go lower later on down the road if you want.
The same 4wheelparts web site you were looking out earlier will give you the carrier splits....which carrier for which ratio. I believe ringpinion.com has them too. (as a warning, do not use genuine gear. Search hear or pirate and you will find out why)

I believe he's talking about his Dana 44 Cherokee Chief axles, which have a 373/392 split on the case.

Those are the ones I am talking about. I was asking this in the case that if my budget runs out and I couldn't afford the lockers, would I have to change out the carrier or not. I know that I would be losing either way by not going with the lockers in the first place, but I wanted to know if anyone had used the thick ones or not.
