So what is the official deal with that? Are they "our" adopted trails? Did we just put up signs? Do we have any type of connection with the BLM when it was done? Just curious, still trying to keep the ball rolling on the bypass/rebuild of those trails. What is the history old timers;)

The trails were getting popular very quick in a unhealthy manor, introducing bypasses, trash, trees getting ruined, etc. Someone needed to step-up & help manage the 2 trails. Since the people that started wheeling the trails were on here, we decided to step up as a group and help minimize damage/manage the trails. The signs were an idea to help direct visitors that weren't so trail-friendly 'educated'. We basically installed the signs with a 'easier to ask forgiveness than permission' outlook. We wanted to show the BLM that we'd step-up and do what so many people were arguing about.

I think that most RME members that get out there will be more thoughtful than the average Joe, picking up trash as they see it, removing stacked rocks, etc.

We have been trying to work with the BLM for sometime for future improvements, but some of the things we want to do will effect other usergroups and working with the BLM is a slow, drawn-out process. They are revising the travel plan for the area and that may not include parts of these trails in the new plan. As I understand, we're waiting to head the outcome of the new travel plan & then proceed from there.

In the meantime, if we need to schedule a trail cleanup just say so & get a date set. It's a great area & convenient to have a hard challenge so close. Let's continue to maintain the area & hope the future is promising for the 2 trails.

I was just curious as to our official viewpoint on those trails. I know utah 4x4 club is trying to adopt a trail in Af canyon. Tacoma and I have been trying to get approval to work on the bypass at WW and constrictor through the BLM but their rep is very hard to get a hold of and doesn't return messages, at least to me. The last time Tacoma had spoken to her, they needed us to run the trail with one of thier gps to see exactley where the trail lies on whos land it is.

far enough away
The main reason for that is so they can tell us who the &#@$(& owns or is in charge of the land in question. From the map they sent it doesn't seem like BLM owns much of either trail...... ???

Every time we hit RS/WW/CON we talk about this. Time to organize a cleanup/repair before it gets too warm (cant believe I just said that). The last one went well as far as cleanup goes but, we need to work on bypasses for sure. We ran CON a few weeks ago and that thing has gotten wide.

Hey, I'm for rolling/dynamiting/winching as many L_A_R_G_E boulders into RS as possible to turn that 3 trail into a 5+:greg:

It got me thinking that if the BLM knows we have adpopteed these trails isn't it within our right to fix them everytime we are up there to prevent this crap from happening. Nothing crazy mind you. Just like the adpot a road program, you don't need to tell them that your doing it, just do it and document it so in the future it will show that we are maintaining these trails and want to help keep them open and show responsible use. They actions could help get these trails on the travel plan that is coming up.

Does RME have a memo of understanding (MOU) or volunteer agreement with the SL Field Office that was filed when the trails were adopted?

If not, then it's the place to start.

We can't save trails unless the work and commitment is documented with the managing agency. It's the only way we're going to be able to keep stuff open in the long-term.

Picking up trash on trail rides and stealth projects are good, but it takes documented and approved projects to maintain continuity over the long haul when land managers change positions.

U4WDA would like to help as much as possible to get this agreement and documentation in place (if it's not already in place).

Also, the MOU would help to avoid having to wait on the BLM for future minor service projects or clean-ups. After action reports can be submitted.

dont mean to hijack the thread but what is the "good wheeler" policy on stacking rocks? Earlier it was mentioned that you guys remove the stacked rocks. If we stack them to get up and then put them back is that ok? Or we just need to spend some money and get better equipment so we can climb right up?
