As spring approaches I've been wondering, should I bike to work? I only work six miles from my house, its all down hill there so I don't need to worry about getting all sweaty for work and it would be a pretty good ride back home.
Since I live so close, I like the idea of it because it would cut down on my fuel costs and it'd be a nice work out. I'm ambivalent because I hate road cyclists. Yes, I hate them because they disobey every damn traffic law in the book and act all high and mighty about it. I know there are good ones out there, and I like to think that I would be one of them, but I just don't want to get lumped in with the jackasses.
Thoughts?

Im the same way, I used to go out biking a lot and hate all the idiot cyclists.

Just dont do the things that bug you and it will be a great way to stay in shape and save money.

If your not going real far and can take bike lanes or roads with enough room on the side I'd say bike to work.
In the 80's I road a bike to work at Cottonwood Mall for graveyards from 5th south and 11th east. There was no traffic at that time of night on Highland drive and it was summer time. :)
Even if you follow the laws you have to watch the cars real close, a lot of drivers are blind to anything but cars.
And be sure to wear some real tight shorts so you look cool:rofl:
When I worked downtown I used to laugh at all the people I'd see drive to 2nd south and 2nd east then take there bike off the rack on their car to ride the last block to work.

I've never been able to bike to work because I would have to change when I get there, and I always hated taking my work clothes in a backpack...

Dollar a day can add up to a lot. The goal is to get our fuel costs down to $40 or less a month. Last month we managed $60 in the winter! Fuel prices are only going to go up, so I'm looking at ways to save some more.
As for the bike, yes it would be one of those fancy European race bikes... from about 1964. Its a Raleigh 10 Speed that is my dad's. I'd have to restore it, but that could be part of the fun!

Is there a Cody around here that drives a Cherokee?

Is this really a decision you needed help with Stephen? You can't decide on your own if you want to ride your bike to work or not? Maybe try it out and decide if it's worth it. If I lived close enough and didn't require my car to make sales calls, I would consider it on some days.

It can be fun, healthy, and at the same time dangerous and unpredictable (rain, flats) Working bike shops for the last 7 years has made me not want to share the road for my own safety. I can commute from my house (provo foothills) to work in Lindon via the Bonneville shoreline trail-mostly dirt. Takes me 20 minutes to drive and an hour-and-a-half to ride but very satisfying, and I arrive happy to work. I contradict myself because it seems as soon as my tires hit pavement on that ride a driver on a cell doesn't see me and I almost get hit.

because those 10 extra pounds are just awesome :D

because full suspension on 1.5" tires at 100psi is about 400x more comfortable than your gay road bike. :D

hehe road bikes are great for training... but having torn the derailleur hanger off one and grenaded a couple rims they just make me, personally, nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs. :D

(don't tell anyone i want one)

You drive a Cherokee, right?;)

And no, I don't need you to make the decision for me, just want to hear opinions. I will probably give it a go and see how it works out.

No, I don't drive a cherokee.

And yes, by 28 or however old you are, I would hope you'd be able to make some of these decisions on your own ;) You're not asking if you should have a kid (good god no!), you're asking if you should ride a freaking bike to freaking work lol

maybe I'll post a poll to find out if I should or should not have beers with you

and then I'll post another about which means of transportation I should take to meet should the majority decide it's a good idea. perhaps I'll ride a bike ;)

Well, we govern from opinion polls, so it only makes sense.
