Rock Cross this weekend

soooooo any updates?

Just got home. It's an interesting series. Fun to watch, when anything is happening. Waaaaaaaaay too much time between runs. I don't care if the schedule says the main event is at ten, you HAVE to keep the action moving or you'll lose the crowd. In rock crawling there are many courses all going at once. So if there's a 15 minutes pause between runs you have other courses to watch. In Rock Cross there is only one course, so you can't wait 15, 30, or 45 minutes between runs. Keep it running, don't wait for competitors. If they don't show up on time, they don't run. They'll get the hint pretty quick. Other than that it was a complete mess, but fun to watch when it's running.

We were there. It was fun, but way to long between events. Its hard to keep young boys interested when nothings happening, but they enjoyed it when there was action!

I also think they need more "rock racing" obstacles. The first obstacle was a big wall and enough room for 3 at once. They need to have 5 more that are similar, so there are more chances to pass each other, more chances to get stuck or denied. It would add to the excitement.

Yeah, there's just really not much at RMR that is conducive to 3 wide racing. The venue just sucks for Rock Cross.

What happened to the buggy that Jason Fueling (I think that is the right name) was driving? It looked like the whole passenger side / A piller of the cage failed. I was surprised they allowed him to continue.

I think UROC is on to something here. They need to work out a few bugs but overall I think it is more entertaining than normal rockcrawling. One thing I would change is instead of having a straight away at the end of the course, make it a technical rock crawling hill so the others can catch up and have one last chance to win if someone makes a mistake.

I like the head to head racing more than the timed racing because you see the cars trying to pass each other. You even saw the competitors cut each other off and undercut each other causing their competitors to roll. Nate Williams turned under a guy that was slightly ahead of him causing him to flip and Nate whent on to win. Brandon Johnson did the same thing to Shannon Campbell and sent the big dog home crying.Thats what I think makes this format way cool.

I would love to see this @ a venue like BFE where they would have more room to set up the track with better obstacles.

You have to be careful how you write your statement. It implies that Nate tried to roll Rob on purpose. You didn't mention the fact that Rob bumped him off his line that he was first to pick at the bottom of the hill and that he was turtled at the top and that rob's rear tire ran over his, causing him to roll. You also imply that Nate won due to that roll, when the roll was on a qualifying run. The event was awesome and alot of fun.

I was there, it was a lot of fun. Like other's said, way too long between events. They should have been getting the next competitors lined up while the preceding race was still running.

I had to leave right after Shannon was shut out (the second chance), so what were the final results?

BTW, Nate was driving the wheels off the K2 and kicking some ass.

I posted the few videos I took. I think I got three videos of the that run.

awsome event. different but awsome... the action(when on) was great. I think everyone that was there will agree that they have somebugs to work out. moving things along faster woulf be #1 I think. I had to leave early to fly back to St George, but from what I saw...UROC hit the nail on the head with this format of racing. I was talking to alot of the competitors before hand, and a lot of them had questins on how this will turn out. But I think their questions got answered. Just knowing Ranch and his staff (wheither you like him or not youhave to agree) They will listen to sugestions and make it much faster pace.

The crowd was great. George Watson from Twisted Customs was talking to me about how many people where there. He was amazed at the turnout, and was excited about the exposure that sponsors where going to get, and we all know how important Sponsors are in this sport.

Shannon was way excited to "get it" and by the looks of things on his first run, he was a little too excited ( he rolled and was out of the race). Nate drove smart from what I saw, and won his heat race. I think people (including competitors) thought that this would be a petal to the metal type of racing, but soon realized that it take a ton of timing and precision. Go real fast on the strait aways and take your time and dont flop your rig on the climbs.

Anyways that is just my take on the event. I have about 20 pictures and will post in a few minutes.

From a non biased spectators standpoint after rob pulled ahead on the hill it looked like Nate turned to the right and positioned his right front tire between Rob's left front and rear tires. Rob's rear left to drove over Nate's tire putting him off camber which caused the flip.

Nate won that heat as a result of this clever (mabye slightly dirty) move in my opinion. It was a great move within the rules I assume?

Dont get me wrong, I'm not critical of any competitor, as I don't know any of them personally. It was just sequences like this that got me pumped and make this format have a potential to be really exiciting.

Are you kidding? Watch the video, Nate is on the rock first, and is sawing the wheel back and forth trying to climb, as he starts to slide backwards the front end slides sideways. In fact, he was sliding to the right before Rob even gets near him. It was random slide, nothing more. But I guess there's always going to be the person that believes the way you do, no matter what.

Interesting night.
I thought the action was awsome when going. WTF was up with the sitting around? THat was totally gay. 6 hours with only 20 rigs. Ranch is smarter than that(I think). What is with the do overs? Do other racers get do overs? Some interesting stratagies of racing. I like the bumping and what not but I think I would just get a really big front bumper and just push everyone out of the way. Ben Hanks and James Maybe F---ing WOW. Congrats to Nate and Jimmy on the wins but holy cow those two put on a show. Hands down some true sportsman like down and dirty bad ass racing. The race track always brings out some interesting people. Some white trash working girl I think was trying to hit on my wife. She was talking about looking at her and she hurt her or her feelings or something crazy like that. Oh well, another day at the races. Best of luck uroc
Later.....

It did fail, as cages of that design have failed in the past. The A-pillar was supported by a teube the was run to the middle of it, instead of meeting it at the top corner. When he rolled hard it bent the a-pillar right there. Poor design. The failure was on the passenger side, and the spotter did not ride after that run. I don't know how comfortable I would be in that buggy after (or before...) that failure. :ugh:

We will work on ways to speed things up. We did have a long flat section while Maverik and Big Rock filmed for a ½ hour special on the event. While cool, it set an slow undertone. Pomona will be a bit different due to the time constraints there.

Mike mentioned the do overs. I am not totally sure of what your talking about but presume it was the Johnson/Campbell re-run. The deal there was that there were two distinct differences of opinion by the teams and the Marshal was on the opposite side of the action in question. Because we were not able to get a good look at it and they were just starting (this happened 40 yards from the start) we decided the best choice was to re-start them.

I totally agree with Ranch. I was watching right across from the "event". I think in all fairness there should have been a rerun. They should come up with a set of gates the would define a rerun if no one makes it to there, ore there is a major incident and they have not reached the gates or obstacle. It sucks that Shannon's rig was broke and the rerun was mostly uneventful.

I have to say this went way better than I could of imagined at RMR. The delays were bad. I think they will get that addressed in the future. I feel it needs to be set-up like baseball. You have the heat that is up to race, the next heat "on deck", and a third heat "in the hole". Give it 5 minutes or so to get the course cleared and ready to run, then get the next heat running.

Oh yeah, WAY TO GO NATE!!!! He kicked butt all night. The fact that he would have to lose twice in the final race shows how much he rocked even on a sick motor. That thing started to sound like my father in law's 1930's Oliver tractor.

It was fun and I believe it will get better.

Just a little advise Ranch.
Get your people(marshalls) off the track. One of the problems is I think you should have zig zaged the coarse and opened it up. Spectators couldn't see and if most everything is on one side marshalls could be where the need to be. I also think some sort of Lighting(multiple) down the coarse(yellow flashers) when in caution so everyone knows what is going on.

Do overs- a few times you restarted with some sort of minute delay. Not following that. I sure it was because someone rolled or broke. In the future start the remaining drivers where they stoped and start them together. The minute delay was gay. I think it would be better racing.

PS
