roof top spare

As much as I hate to do it for weight distribution, I fear I am going to have to carry my spare up top when I get new tires and keep a 32" for a spare. Don't think it will fit underneith.

Other than buying an official mouting system (the smart thing, I know) are there any safe ways to strap or otherwise store the spare (the cheap thing)?

I had mine on my roof for a while. I boxed it in with my OEM crossbars, and ran a rachet strap in an X over it. I greatly prefer having my spare inside... I really feel the difference in not having the weight on the roof.

The Montero comes with lots of under-floor storage in the rear. Would hate to loose that.

Do that and I can't tow and carry my spare, too.

If anyone would be able and interested in fabbing a swing out style rear spare carrier (for cheap), PM me. If I could get it out of the way as far as departure angle without totally blocking rear view, that would be ideal.

Do you really think it will be a good idea to put about 100 lbs or more on the roof? I wouldn't want to have that on my rig and then run the possibility of having to get it down in a bad place.
