Rope or wire rope?

I wouldnt use it ever again....
For one I hate the fact that everytime you use it has to be pulled out by the vehicle weight because the line always gets caught underneath the others and you can't hardly ever get it out by hand.......It's safer for crowds but more expensive than wire, doesnt last even close as long and for most of what we do wire rope will always be safer because theirs less chance of it breaking due to damage on sharp objects.
You can rely on wire even if a couple of strands are tweaked.
That's just my opinion..
if you can get it for free and get about 5 ropes a year then I would do it but other than that I went back to wire and that's were I'll stay for now....

Synthetic rope is about 1/4 the weight of wire rope. We've never had any issues with pulling the rope out by hand, but the old wire rope did have free-spool issues sometimes.

It's much nicer for the spotter to carry, nicer to your hands, you don't have to worry nearly as much about making sure it's spooled nicely.

I like it. (though I wouldn't pay Masterpull's prices....)

Yup, we sell it. Obviously I must recommend myself as the best source. :D I've got it in stock, as long as you want 5/16" x 125' of it. (I can get whatever, but that seems the most commonly desired)

Andy, here are a few prices for ya:

3/8" x 80', 20,400lb winch rope, $135
3/8" x 100', 20,400lb winch rope, $170
3/8" x 125', 20,400lb winch rope, $210

Of course, 5/16" ropes in these lengths are substantially less if that is an option. I run the 5/16" line on my rig and it's not exactly a "lightweight". :D

At the Supercrawl driver meeting Craig said 5/16" was okay.

The rules don't say anything about size, just strength.

"Winches must use rope (non metal) with a minimum burst strength of nine thousand five hundred (9,500) pounds. Rope must be in acceptable condition with minimal fraying or kinks. Clevis hooks must be rated at ten thousand (10,000) pounds."

As far as I know cable is still going to be allowed....
like they say if it aint broke don't fix it..........
I know cables can break to but I have never heard of a terrible story and i have never seen one. I replace cables every year due to my sponsors give me new ones for free.....
If your responsible and check your equiptment than you should never have a problem with it......
Hint Hint;)

Not if me or my sponsors have anything to say about it....
If they make me run rope than i will put on an atv winch to save weight.
Warn says NO ROPE.........
The winch is designed to utilize wire and not rope and if it has rope they say it will void waranty's (i could care)and doesnt even perform right as far as weight and 9500 pounds and what not..
Bullcrap

OUCH. If using rope on a Warn winch voids the warranty, maybe that ought to be brought up to UROC. I would imagine a rule that inherantly voids the warranty of your winch would have to be looked at pretty close. Not that it changes anything, but of course it's possible that Warn is saying that because Warn sells wire cables, not rope;)

Warn says no because of the fact they beleive that the rope can cause damage to your winch. The rope is an insulator unlike the cable that will dissapate (sp?) the heat. The built up heat can theoretically cause damage to the internals of the winch (lube-gears-motor). I'm not sure Wanr has much evidence on the subject or they are just throwing out a disclaimer to cover their butts?

Ask I-Lean or Vonski more about this subject...they are the ones that schooled me, they know alot about the aspects of rope since they deal with them everyday.

That makes sense. Mike? Any input?

Yah the heat and such is one I know the other is the way the rope spools on or off.. Wire makes layers if wound up nice and tight and once you put rope on and hook it up it goes to the bottom of the spool and causes the winch to operate without the help of the rap's causing the pull to be less and also help create heat....
I'm talking with warn and I will get their exact...
I would like to know Ramsey's take too.
I'll find out
