ROY -- Friends of a 30-year-old father shot and killed by police are reacting to his death.

Damon Lee Weems died early this morning after he opened fire on officers in his living room and they shot back. The officers weren't hurt but are on paid administrative leave while an investigation is completed.

The Roy police chief is confident that the investigation will find his officers were simply defending themselves when they shot and killed Weems.

Weems has a lengthy criminal past, but neighbors say he had turned his life around.

Friend Carlos Deveraux said, "They (Weems and his son) were out there two or three days ago playing ball."

His favorite memories of Weems are of watching Weems playing with his 10 year old son. The news that his friend was shot and killed by police has been hard to take.

Chief Greg Whinham, with the Roy Police Department, said, "The phone was apparently set down inside the house. We could hear crying and screaming inside the house."

When they arrived they found Weems' mother and son, who told officers Weems was in another part of the apartment with a gun.

"We tried to have communication with him, and he fired a round through the door, through the closed door into the hallway," Whinham said.

They were evacuating the grandmother and son when another shot was fired. Then Weems entered the living room, armed with a shotgun.

"There was an exchange of gunfire inside the living quarters between the suspect and the officers," Whinham said.

Weeems died at the scene.

He had a lengthy criminal past, including drug, weapons and assault charges. He'd been released from prison last year, and neighbors say he was changing his life, working long hours at a dog food packaging plant and spending time with his son.

Deveraux wishes he'd been able to talk to his friend about those changes last night, before everything took a deadly twist.

"I would've gone into that apartment. I don't care if SWAT or whoever was in there, he was a good man," he said.

The names of the police officers haven't been released, but we're told one is a 25 year veteran of the force, the other has eight years experience and is a K9 officer.

Well, it sucks that someone who had apparently turned his life around found himself in a position that he had a firearm and there were officers present. What would you do differently as an officer, though? If I were them, I'd try to protect myself and I believe that's what they did (at least from the information that is posted). Someone comes at me with a firearm or other weapon, they're getting everything I've got.

If he's been in prison, I'd assume he's a felon. Last I heard, a felon couldn't own a firearm.

There's a thousand ways to go with this. Where do you want to steer it?

I don't get why the media is always trying to paint criminals as such good people and the cops as such bad guys. The headline could have easily been "Police defend themselves against armed gunman." Instead they make it sound like he was just an innocent father that the cops brutally murdered.

Its the same with the pirate hostage story. All the articles talk about how the pirates are such hardworking peaceful muslims and the US military is just a bunch of cold blooded killers. Its a joke.

whats amazing is the neglect to mention that the guy who died was High and was armed with not only a shotgun but a pistol and a hunting knife.

the only reason i brought this up is because my father is the 25 year vet of the force who shot and killed him in self defence. the vic was raising the gun to my dads head so he hit his arm away and shot him in the stomach and the other officer fired 2 rounds in his chest:eek:

talk about a great text from my dad the next morning telling me what happened

Its sad that the guy had to die, and its sad that your dad will have to live with having taken someones life, but your father did the right thing, and its just too bad that the perp didnt change his life more, so as to not create this situation in which he lost.

It also bothers me that the media takes the side of criminals and fails to support law enforcement, the criminal shouldnt have had a fire arm, and he should have not elevated this situation, if you pull a gun with the intent to shoot at a police officer or anyone armed for that fact you should expect to be shot, maybe he did expect that and it was suicide by cop.

The real victim here is the 10 year old who got stuck with a messed up dad hopefully now he can get some good influences in his life and have a real chance. I really am sick and tired of the way the media reports these stories hopefully the police get the support they need in this. You know they can't count on it from the media.

Glad your dad is alright. No officer wants to be in that situation, but the right guy died. He did good. Sucks for the kid.
