Rubicon Trail, Sept 5-8 2012

The trail was really fun and just challenging enough where it hadn't been paved by the Jamboree crews. Outstanding scenery and perfect weather.

The difficult part was navigating the trail with extra weight on the back of the Jeep. I quit carrying the spare and moved weight forward for that reason. My lack of adjusting for said weight (and choosing a harder line) led to a tip over on Walker Hill. Subsequently, Cadillac Hill really had my attention.

I think we must have taken the bypasses, I was at the end of the group so I generally followed TJDukit (excellent driver). I don't recall a lot of CB chatter about taking the obstacle or the bypass.

My son Noah ran ahead and ended up carrying Steve's go pro, but ironically didn't get any footage of his own dad. Did anyone else?

Little sluice was pretty big. There were one or two ledges that were tricky. We all came down big sluice. I didn't see the turn for the sluice box

Except for the optional sluices, it was tons easier than hanging tree. I think it was even easier than golden spike. I feel that there are parts of constrictor that are much tougher than the Rubicon.

Absolutely. The only real challenging parts of the Rubi are the Little Sluice and the True Old Sluice.

I have about 50 different videos to go through and edit and quite a few pictures most of them are scenery pics and not wheeling pics. Luckily the wife just bought a MAC so I think it will do pretty well at editing my videos.

I wish I had a computer that edits videos for me. ;)

Looking forward to them. My brother just send me 900 pictures. I almost think each participant should start their own trip report since the trip was so unique to each person.

I'll get some pictures posted on sunday. This trip report feels like a book report that's due on monday and I just keep putting it off...

I wanted to make sure I caught up on my other videos before I started this one.

You said it, Bart. I used to check in on this thread at least twice a day, eagerly anticipating the bazillion photos everyone else took of this trip. As soon as I saw that Steve was still working on his video of the Hole in the Rock trip way back in March (!), well, I realized it might be a while before anything gets posted here.

I'll still appreciate anything and everything that is posted, whenever that might be.

I want to to the report justice. I could dump a ton of pictures here, but it's the writing the report that I'm working on. It feels like Ispend more time writing the reports than actually completing the trail. :)

I'll get a report up by Sunday night. I haven't even though of starting the video yet. The video will take months.

sounds like you taught him well. While he was taking pics of my rig, my brother was taking pics of your rig. :D

Definitely do the Rubicon. My first posts sounds like I was disappointed with the trail; not the case at all. 5 min into the trail I kept saying to myself "Every single person with a 4x4 needs to stop what theyre doing and run this trail tomorrow. Why had nobody convinced me to do this trail sooner?"

My expectations on the difficulty were way off, but i wasnt disappointed in the slightest. If you want the most difficult trail in the world, look elsewhere. If ypu want the most beautiful trail in the world with a lot of fun little obstacles, the rubicon is for you. I cant place my finger on why, but it was one of the most fun trails ive ever driven. It was totally stress free. Overall, it was probably the best trip ive ever been on. My wife would agree.

Steve you are correct, the Rubicon is very beautiful. Some people off-road for the challenge, others to get out and enjoy the back county with friends. The Rubicon is a trail that should be enjoyed for its scenic beauty and heritage along with enough challenges to make it fun. It was a trip that will be remembered for many years, thanks for putting it together.
