I've tried moving the distributor back and forth on different teeth but didn't help. It actually runs better with it advanced one tooth. I'm almost tempted to pull off the timing cover and make sure the chain is okay. As far as the carb goes, which ports are which? I'm running a line from the back bottom of the carb to the intake and a line off the top front to the distributor. And what is the adjustment down in the hole on top of the carb just before the vent? I got some good info on adjusting the idle screws but nothing about that screw.

OK, not to insult anyone but have you checked that the plug wires are one correctly?

I know it seems really simple, but I have seen more than one motor not wired properly. Check the plug wire orientation.

OH Yah!! forgot about that idle high thing. I was just trying to relate to what I had happen to a couple of motors that I've seen. We couldn't get the dang timing set so we checked the wire orientation.

Hey man sorry, some of us haven't spent a couple of years as drivability techs.;)

Okay, you guys are going to hate me. I got it running "better", but I don't know how, sorry. But it's still not perfect. I calmed myself down and started all over. In trying to get it fixed I put on all the old stuff yesterday. So tonigth I put back in the new ignition system and fresh champion plugs, played with the carb and now I'm getting a nice dark brown color. I got the timing back down where it should be. And yes Pokey, I checked my wiring. I even tried the 5.0/351W scheme just to make sure I got the right cam.

But........it's still backfiring when I get on the throttle. I'm thinking my old distributor has worn out advance springs (which will be taken care of as soon as I get my new one tomorrow). I'm also idling way too rich. I've got my screws all the way in for the best vacuum and idle and it runs even better when I pull off a vacuum hose, which instantly tells me I'm too rich. So I'm thinking my new holley pump (which is probably putting out 7-8 psi) is too strong for the carb or my floats are too high. Any thoughts there?

How old is the dizzy that you have on there now?

I had a Bosch 009 on my bug for a while and was having the same type of problem that you are having with backfiring. I pulled the dizzy and was kinda checking it out, the bushing/bearings in the thing were so worn that the shaft could move laterally inside the housing.

sounds like a vacuum problem to me, what kind of base gasket are you running, better yet, fords are usually a square bore intake pattern where the q-jet is spread bore pattern, what is your gasket arrangement? what kind of intake are you running?

I was thinking a vacuum problem too, but the motor loves vacuum leaks. I pull off a hose and it smoothes out and the vacuum gauge actually goes up a little! I'm running a brand new square bore edelbrock with spread bore carb/adapter and all fresh gaskets. I'm positive there's no leaks. It's running way too rich on idle and I'm getting some feedback that I need to lower my fuel pressure which totally makes sense to me. Putting in the new distributor tonight, I'll let you know how it works.

Personally I think you guys are all looking in the wrong place. You started in the right place, then got off track. I have a 302 in my 64 Falcon that was doing the same thing. Guess what?? CARB!!! Your first mistake is that Q-Jet!! Spend some money, get a Demon Carb, and your troubles will go away. Another option to think of, which I also did, is to go to the parts store, get a rebuilt electronic distributor, the accompanying computer for it, which all costs less than 100 bucks for a stock replacement, go to the local junk yard if needed, and look at how one is wired in. I got so much more precise spark and reliability with it. Do these two things, do a general timing with a regular timing light to get it close, and You'll see a world of difference. I just did this not even 2 weeks ago.......

DEMON?? come on thats not a carb for off road...the QuadraJet is an excellent carb for offroad...(and racing) You just have to set them up correctly. Which isn't black magic....

Don't worry, I'm sticking with the quadrajet. And I got the new distributor in with my MSD. Yeah, she runs now. I learned my lesson, don't dink with old "questionable" parts.

Perhaps I was wrong about the carb!!! I was thinking about my Hotrod Falcon and not about off-road. As far as the ignition goes. MSD is great!!! Glad to hear that it's working for ya now.
