Samurai 1.3 to 1.6 swap- pics*

Well the engine on the samurai finally had enough, or at least I had. So I had been having a 1.6 -8 valve getting machined. After my distributor seized in price and deflected my camshaft in delta, that was it, time to swap it out. It started thanksgiving day with the removal of the old tired 1.3.

I then proceded to start swaping the accessories over like pulleys, intake and propane carb, header, alternator, power steering brackets etc. It didn't take long to find out that the crank pulley bolts didn't match the crank gear so some re drilling was in order. I also had to fab up so new bracket for my powewr steering pump I had made before. The deck height is the only thing different on a 1.6 compared to a 1.3, it is taller. So I plasma-ed a new piece welded it and on we went.

Next I mounted the transmission adapter plate whcih you remove the studs from the bottom and install some tapered bolts. I then proceded to bolt the engine up with a new clutch and you use the sidekick 1.6 starter. Went together pretty smooth took about 2.5 days and had a big timing problem in the end, but worked out well.

what did you have to do with the wiring harnesses for the FI? We did a 1.6 swap in my buddy's sammi but we kept the 1.3 intake and carb because we had no FI intake or harness, but we are in the process of looking for one (hint hint to anyone out there with one).

I have a couple 1.6 intakes and tbi's for the 8 valve. check the drivetrain page, no harness though. I used the stock 1.3 intake so I could keep my propane setup.

Jeez those propane setups sure look nice for the smaller displacement motors in lieu of complex fuel injection systems. How much cash do you have in a propane setup and what kind of problems have you had in getting fueled at various spots?

I have probably around 800 in it including the aluminum tank. I got it from got propane.com. Fueling hasn't been a problem, I run just a forklift tank, and almost all small towns have a trailer place or u haul that has propane. I have never run out and can go a whole weekend without refueling usually. But because you sometimes just can't go to the gas station I fill up any chance I get on long trips. All the wheeling towns I have been too have stations though, moab-2, price-2, delta-3, richfield-2, cedar city-3 so no probelms there
