Samurai EFI

Ok folks, I'm getting an EFI equiped 1.3 Liter from a '92 Samurai to swap into my '86. Who's done this before? Is it easier to just swap the whole engine or should I pull the EFI stuff off and put it on my engine?

The EFI has 70K original, mine was rebuilt about 5 years ago and I think that I have about 50k on it. So mine's probably better, but I just am thinking of ease.

Hmmm... so where did you come across a low mileage Sami motor w/ fuel injection? ;)

Congrats on the new motor... :greg:

It would be even better if you could find the 1.6 head also, even more power, bolts right up. You'd basically have a 1.6 EFI engine then. Thats what I'm looking at doing.

Uh, you mean 1.6 block, not "head". I'm sure SRN is aware of running the 1.3 head on a 1.6 block (using the 1.6 head gasket), but I doubt he's interested in the extra work and expense of a 1.6 swap kit.

maybe I'm wrong, but I was told the only difference in a 1.3 and a 1.6 is the height of the head, a 1.6 is taller, and the FI of course.

Wrongo, buddy boy! The bore & stroke (all in the engine block) determine the displacement of an engine, combustion chamber changes only alter the compression ratio.

The 1.6 has a taller height correct. But greg is right, the valves in the 1.6 are bigger also, I believe just the exhaust.

Some guy in Colorado happened to pick one up for a good deal and was parting it out. Shucks, I almost had the chance to pick one up too, but it just kinda dissapeared... hmmm....:D

Yeah, I always thought that this was a pretty cool set up, I hear that it makes a little better power than the straight 1.6 swap as well. And, Von, I was planning on doing this with a really sweet '92 that I almost picked up.-_-
But on my '86 I don't really want to do the SpOA to make it fit (yes, because I am weird).

which engine is the better rout? upgrading the 1.3 to fi, or going with the bigger 1.6?

All depends on what you are looking for. The 1.6 swap gives you more power and the benefit of EFI, plus its a hell of alot easier to find a wrecked Sidekick/Tracker to pull one out of while its much more difficult to find a 91-95 Samurai as a donor. But to fit the 1.6 you have to get the various adapters (for the tranny and mounts) and then you have to get the oil pan to clear the axle, usually by doing a SpOA.
I'm going for the 1.3 EFI swap for several reasons:
It bolts right up, no adapters
I managed to find a 1.3 EFI
And, as Von can attest, I am very strange and adamently refuse to do a SpOA or any kind of large lift to my current Sami

But if you're looking to get some more power than stock, the 1.6 swap is pretty common and not that hard to do. The VW deisel swap is also a great option. I think that RRO still sells the adapters for that.
