The purpose is that you can buy one and take it out wheeling just as much as the guys with the high-dollar tube buggies or UTV's that they are making payments on. I'm surprised you haven't owned one in your quest to own every vehicle out there for ten minutes ;)

I love this. Fun is so relative anyways. Just being out with friends is fun romping a low dollar rig just makes it better.

Interesting!!! :D I've been of the opinion that the UTV's look like a lot of fun but, with the expense of a well built Jeep or other small 4X4, & the inability to serve as an ATV!

Most trails are limited to 42". So that leaves fire roads, designated UTV trails, & dunes as their playgrounds.:-\ They're not street legal in most places, so they have to be towed on a trailer  a 4 pos. ATV trailer can haul 2 small SXS's loaded sideways or 1 large), then there is the power to weight ratio which, on paper looks good , untill you add 700# or more people & gear, it makes a lot more dif on a 50 HP/1200# rig than a 150 HP/3600# rig!:-\

I guess that every addiction needs a solution, thus, the UTV, ATV, ORV, PWC, TSB, ETC...:greg:

some of the most fun I've had is in my ridiculous low buck dune buggy contraptions

Yep, Ive had just as much fun in the early years with my low budget rig on 32" tires as I have these days in a buggy with 40's and nitrogen... ive thought about getting rid of the buggy and getting back to primitive agian.

I have a rzr in the back yard. I have used it a few times and it is never as much fun as I think it is going to be. I love riding 4 wheelers, but can't get into the side by sides for some reason. I am sure if it was crazy built it would be more fun.

I do think those Sidekick/Trackers are pretty cool, but cut off the A & B pillars, ditch the doors and tube it out!

I wonder how hard it would be to swap in a Tacoma front IFS diff and fab up a set of slightly wider and stronger A arms. Run some decent coilovers and possibly build a trailing arm rear suspension using coilovers, with a Toyota Supra IRS diff... lots of work and money, but it has potential!

The tacoma front diff swap has been done. It actually looked pretty easy. They might have taken the torsion bar setup too and integrated that. I can't remember off the top of my head.

The biggest downfall of the sidekicks is that they're geared with 5:13s from the factory, and you can't go much lower than that without getting a really weak pinion.
