That's intriguing rock art, DAA, do you know anything more about it? I didn't know the horned snake could be found that far north (or that early - isn't that Archaic?).

I don't know a whole lot about it. But, nobody can honestly say they do and that includes the so-called experts. This panel is often called the Transformation panel, because many of the anthropomorphs appear to be depicted in a state of transformation or changing. It's a very detailed and well done panel. This was my first time finding/visiting it, but I'll go back - it's one of my favorite panels I've seen in person to date.

I've seen horned serpents even farther north though. Off the top of my head, I know there are several horned serpents in the main Buckhorn panel - might even be a picture of one earlier in this thread. And I know there is at least one horned serpent on the Prickly Pear panel too. I "think" but can't remember for sure, but think there is at least one horned serpent on one of the Sego panels as well? Those are all further north than this.

Date... As I'm sure you know, it isn't possible to directly date rock art and there is still plenty of debate amongst scholars as to the date range of Barrier Canyon Style panels like this one. But, I think the vast majority agree that they are no later than Archaic. Many believe them to be Paleo though - as much as 9,000 years old. A lot of the thought behind that has to do with dated figurines recovered from the 9,000 year level of Cowboy cave that bear striking resemblence to the BCS style anthropomorphs.

That's why we try to clearly state the vehicle requirements for each trip. The requirements for this were:

Vehicle Requirements (not suggestions):
- very reliable vehicle. We will be FAR from a gas station, mechanic, and civilization (that's the point)
- vehicle capable of light offroad driving (4x4 mandatory, no lift/lockers necessary)
- we will go almost 250 miles between gas stations. If your vehicle does not have a range of 300 miles to the tank, bring enough extra gas to get your vehicle 300 miles (remember, these are dirt miles, not highway miles).
- you MUST have a spare tire in good shape that can carry you 200 miles
- you MUST have a jack/tire iron to change that spare tire

My monthly trips will vary in difficulty, so pay attention to the "vehicle requirements" for each trip, and you'll have an idea of what you can do and what you can't. Some trips will be easy dirt roads, others will require lockers and lifts.

Thanks guys, glad you dug it :) Cool footage of us playin, thanks again Dave. Pretty sure that was officially the earliest I have ever played music, lol. Normally I have the evening sky, fire and some Whisky lube to fuel Guit Fiddle Blondie. The desert is a "Swell" place to play anytime of the day...

So you are saying this is my own fault?? I can't accept that, and the government says I don't have to!
It should be someone elses responsibility to read each thread and tell me what it says... Right?? :ugh:

:D

Not your "fault", just that we do our best to educate everyone on what to expect. Bummer you didn't make it, it was a fun trip.

The "Rain Angel" panel was once painted over by a bunch of jackasses  Luckily it could be restored for the most part.

I checked my Sego photos and didn't see one. Doesn't mean it isn't there, though, obviously I'll have to go back. :D I'll check those others out too, so thanks for those!

If you are interested in the B.C.S. rock art, check out this page. Craig is my good friend's father (just retired from USU) and is pursuing this project even more so this summer. He has some of his work at the Smithsonian, and some at my house. Uses all large format cameras. Some of you may be familiar with the 'Sacred Images' publication. Many of his photos are in that book as well. Interesting stuff.
