San Rafael Swell trip, Feb 9-12

In order to meet my goal of going wheeling once a month, I realized I need to plan something for Feb. Aside from goblin valley, I've never been to the swell. So bear with me, this trip could either be TONS of driving, or not enough. It's a learning experience for me as I haven't been to the area.

We will be on CB Channel 39

Vehicle Requirements (not suggestions):
- very reliable vehicle. We will be FAR from a gas station, mechanic, and civilization (that's the point)
- vehicle capable of light offroad driving (4x4 mandatory, no lift/lockers necessary)
- we will go almost 250 miles between gas stations. If your vehicle does not have a range of 300 miles to the tank, bring enough extra gas to get your vehicle 300 miles (remember, these are dirt miles, not highway miles).
- you MUST have a spare tire in good shape that can carry you 200 miles
- you MUST have a jack/tire iron to change that spare tire

Personal Requirements:
- good attitude
- camping gear for 2 nights
- food for the entire trip
- lots of water
- hiking boots (or something you can walk comfortably in)

Here's the SRS Map from the county:

Thursday
5:45 PM --> Meet at Cabellas
6:00 PM --> Leave Cabellas
8:30 --> Meet up in Castle Dale (point A on map)
8:45 --> head out on the trail for Wedge Overlook
10:00 --> Set up camp at Wedge Overlook (Point E on map)

Friday
10 AM --> leave wedge overlook (A) heading towards the san rafael bridge and stop to see the pictographs/petroglyhs along the way
1:30 PM --> Lunch at Swasey's leap (E)
4:00 --> Swasey's Cabin (I)
5:00 --> head through Rod's Valley to Reds Canyon.
5: 20 --> set up camp and have dinner

Friday night campsite is at:

38°45'10.02"N
110°49'9.04"W

[map]http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Co+Rd+1012&daddr=Co+Rd+1012+to:Co+Rd+1012&hl=en&sll=38.753221,-110.81833&sspn=0.003845,0.008256&geocode=FTZSTwIdgwhl-Q%3BFd9RTwId8gdl-Q%3BFYVRTwIdOAdl-Q&mra=pr&t=h&z=18[/map]

We will not be more than 200 yards from here. We'll make sure our vehicles and our fire are visible from this point. We'll probably pull about 100 feet off the road, assuming there is an established place to do so.

Saturday
Reds canyon loop --> heart of sinbad road --> temple mountain --> highway 24 --> green river for gas.

Anyone with a good attitude and a reliable vehicle is welcome to join us. I'm usually of the mentality of "the more the merrier."

Plan is to leave Thursday night around 6, and drive down and camp that night. Then I plan on returning Saturday night. It'll be a relaxed trip, but we'll be doing quite a bit of driving.

I'd be interested, but the only 4x4 I have available is the wife's '03 4Runner. It's fine on most regular dirt roads, but won't be heading down any real rough trails.

I would like to explore the area around Cathedral Valley, Solomons Temple, etc.

I am off this weekend and have been wanting to get back down there. However i generally have a bad attitude ad my truck needs lots of attention before I can hit trail again.

we'd love to have you join us Greg. There's still time to install an OME lift on that '03 :D

I don't know the area at all, so I don't know what's a rough trail and what isn't. I'll be doing a lot more research in the next couple days. I needed this thread to motivate me to get the planning underway.

attitudes and trucks are fixable :D

What do you still need Lewis? I've been looking forward to meeting you and seeing your rig in person. Hopefully you can make it.

It's already lifted, just no rock sliders... I won't beat it up, the wife would kill me. ;)

I know some of the area, but I'm far from an expert. There is plenty of stuff I want to see.

Were thinking about coming steve. Only thing that will really keep us from coming is our little boy. Just depends on how he's doing at the time and things like that. Sounds fun though.

Cool. I'd like to do some trails that requires 4wd (and depending on the weather, we might all need 4wd), but I'm not looking to do any "rock crawling" per se. So plan on coming. I'll do my best to pick routes that won't be an issue for your wife's rig.

There's not much "rock crawling" in the SRS. Greg, your 4runner will be just fine doing 95% of the trails down there. You'd even be able to do the Devil Racetrack with some good spotting and driving.

Got your text and will reply. I am heading up snowmobiling for that weekend or I would be in for sure. February is a hard month because I have to be out of town for some of it and then over the 17th I am heading to St George to ride. I will be ready for Marchs trip.

Good to know. What about "fix it pass", is it any worse than rattlesnake?

Yeah, it's getting in the wrong spot on the other 5% of the trails that concern me. I don't mind being put in places where slow driving and spotting are needed, I just don't want to chance any damage to my wife's clean daily driver.

I'm an idiot. I just realized I spelled rafael wrong. Oh well, noob here.

Greg, I don't plan on doing anything crazy. We'll have SAMI check our route, and hopefully he can give us an idea of how extreme the trail is. I'm willing to re-route if it's too technical.

Fixed the title for ya... ;)

I figured as much Steve, I have no problem with a rough 4x4 trail, but don't want anyone to think that a mostly stock 4Runner is going to hold them back from enjoying a difficult trail.

well, considering you're the only one who has a semi-firm commitment, it may just be you and me. :D

I've got a friend who will be bringing his full-size dodge 4x4. Not lifted. I'm looking for a mellow trip anyway, so it'll be no problem accommodating your grocery getter :D
