Trip Report Sand hollow

Got the Jeep out for the first time in 2 years and since the motor trans and steering changes. The mildly built 6.0 is a real ripper. I’ve never been able to go up the dunes that fast!

Wednesday night I did double Sammy at dusk for a shakedown. All good. Felt great to be back in the seat. It did take me a bit to used to it. The new trans behaves quite a bit different and my bumping muscle memory needed recalibration. Did the bigger option lines and ripped though the trail in about 40 min.

Thursday morning we finally got on the trail close to 11. Some in our group arrived at 1 am the night before. Always delays things. We met at the water tanks and headed towards sliplock gulch with the idea to play on west rim and hit the maze later on.
Sliplock gulch was a fun trail. I’d never been on it. I think it is a bit under rated at 6. At least if you take all the option lines. My cousin felt the laws of physics take over. Luckily stayed rubber side down and took an alternate line and we moved on. These are the pics I have. Video to come.

After sliplock, we decided to head off to john’s trail instead. It was getting later in the afternoon and since the sun goes down earlier, best to do a shorter one. Johns trail has quite a few bonus lines and is a good time. On this trip up it I noticed a chute about 1/2 way up the trail off the left side that had some tracks on it. Decided to give it a whirl. The lower section wasn’t too bad. The upper section was tricky. Had to sneak around a huge outcropping on the left and then find enough traction to shoot up it once past it. A few things. I should have walked it first. The sun was in my eyes and basically couldn’t see out the steering wheel. Finally it was freakin steep and I couldn’t get traction to launch all the way up and stay far enough left. Slid into the wall at the right and had to winch the rest. Maybe should have tried heating up the stickies a bit. Oh well. My oil pan mods worked great. Engine held solid at 20 psi pressure at those angles.

Friday we ran The Fallen. I thought it was rated 8. Apparently it’s 9. I would rate it at 8. It is not at the same level as Nasty Half in my opinion. I’d say it’s more along the lines of the maze in terms of difficulty. That said, super fun trail. Great obstacles. We had a relatively uneventful trip up the trail until the obstacle just before the end. My uncle was slightly too far right and wheelied over backwards. He’d just finished swapping in a 6.0 and 4l60. Unfortunately he hadn’t cut the gates out of his winters shifter and had a hard time finding reverse. He found it a little too late. Sad day. He’ll rebuild and be back better.

We got the Jeep righted, pulled plugs to be safe and got it fired up and off the trail. The damage was moderate but injuries nonexistent thankfully.

Looks like a great trip, proper way to break in the new engine, transmission & steering changes! Crazy roll for your uncle, glad nothing more than pride was injured.

Pretty sure the frame is still straight. It looks bent because the fender got so tweaked and pulled the grill down and backward. Have to see what it looks like when he starts getting into it to fix it.

Dang! Kinda puts a damper on an otherwise great trip but glad everyone is ok.
