Toyota 3FE with a 5 speed (overdrive) behind it :D Even with my carb'd 2F and brick of a rig I can beat 12mph and hold decent speeds. 3FE is on my shortlist of replacements, 1HZ is out front. Not too interested in the Toyota V8's though they are sweet.

ok you know I vote tundra 4.7. I know a guy that has about 10 lying around. The tranny that comes behind it is aisin A340 same as in all Toyota automatics except the pan is a little deeper and it is valved a little different. there are adapters to mate gear driven t-cases available as well. The 4.7 is the same block essentially as the motor I am using in my buggy the Lexus 4.0. Except the 4.7 is an iron block = heavy! but hey you have a fj40 they are already heavy. the motor is killer though. quad cam, 32 valve, 6 bolt main!
and the best part is the wiring is not hard at all...well for me :D but i could help you or just build you a harness.

Also there are guys that have successfully mated gm trannies to this motor th350, 400 ect..

I think it is really cool to stay all Toyota! but in saying that, it does take a little more creative thinking and planning. and maybe a tiny bit more money. But then it would be unique and cool. There is a reason so many fj40 owners have swapped in a 350 and called it good....its super easy!!

You missed the point... you're considering the Toyota 4.7, correct? Comparing it to the 5.3, it probably costs MORE to wire & re-flash the Toyota 4.7 vs. the GM Gen III engines. So 'cheap' goes out the window.
This is what I need to know... :D If it's going to be relative, costwise, to a 5.3 swap, then I'd just do that swap.

You just need a Toyota 3FE with a 4 speed behind it. Torque, and tons of it. If I understand FJ40's, 60's and 80's, it should be easy to make it all bolt up to factory parts. Shouldn't be that hard to wire and those engines should be all over.
Also an option, but from what I understand there is not much of any gain except driveability? Not that it's not worth considering... because that's a big part of why I love TBI: it works. I will have to consult with Kurt. Or buy an 80 to swap a 5.3 into hahahh

The 5spd is high on my list of heavily desired Toyota upgrades... If you're getting better than 12mph with a 2f... that 4.3 isn't looking that bad.... choices!

and before you say it, yes, the F engine is going in first, since it runs and bolts up AS IS hahahah

pretty sure that no automatic is really an option in an uncut FJ40... :(

Easy is good, and it may just come down to that.. but I am going to try pretty hard to honor the heritage of this particular FJ, it's not some perfect vehicle but its' clean enough that I'd like to keep it pretty original, and if I can't, then at least as much as I can.

automatic can be short. but the are several trannies you can mate behind it. shit you should put the 4.0 lexus motor in it like me. i will just make a double of my stand alone harness :D its cheap light and its going to be a motor of choice for huys to swap in the future as soon as the secret is out of the bag that it is lighter and more compacked and makes more power than the 5vzfe "3.4" v6

An old classic rig needs an old classic motor... With modern EFI of course :D For that reason I would be looking into the 3FE and a five speed manual if it were mine. Remember that's coming from a guy that is more than happy with a carb'ed 20R :-\

Next I would look into the 3.4 5VZ-FE V6 as they put out great power and they had a long production run without too many changes so parts aren't too exotic. It is common to see these supercharged, but there are a few fuel system upgrades that need to be done to get the most out of that. You could use whatever trans comes behind it (manual or auto) with an adapter and use mini truck t-cases for cheap low gearing and the v6 won't blow them to pieces where it would be more likely with the V8's.

A classic Toyota does not deserve a GM motor. Regardless of reliability, power and price it just isn't right and the swaps shouldn't exist :wtf: :D

To get more power out of an old 40, I'd suggest a built 383 stroker, 4-barrel Holley, and SM465/TH400. Dana 60's optional, I'm partial to Yota axles :D

You'd surprise a lot of Duramax's at stop lights....
