Schwarttzy Trail guide google maps

Couple things on your main page. The note you have in the left corner has a couple errors. Physical = physically. Besure = Be sure. I'm still not seeing any thumbnails though.....using IE7 if that matters.

Well the thumbnails are currently only around Attica, IN - Badlands and you have to zoom in five times for it to activate.

Though I would update you guys on some new features coming. I have been work out the syntax problems and got youtube video into the map, I just have a icon in the center of the map right now but soon I'm going to have 10 videos that constantly change locations on the map depending upon that weeks favorite video is.

Well I thought I should tell you guys, for the most part my site is done. I have successfully got photos, video, and a lot of different trails marked. Now I know the site is not done, rightfully so, but it has reach a point of completion none the less.

Okay so I haven't been on here for a while but i got to say I feel like I got ripped off, RME now has its own Google powered Trail map, and if you read the code the javascript and the xml file at the bottom of the page you will notice that it is the code I learned from. Anyways I hope I could at least get credit for it, and at least this site seems to be restricted to Utah.

You mean the trail maps that were here before you ever posted the first time? Sure, take all the credit you want for them.

That is common api code. Nothing was taken from your site.

Why would you get credit for Google's work??? You going to go around to all the sites that use Google's api and ask for credit? Or is it Shane's work you want credit for? Until you have a Google ID badge, I don't think you're owed anything. Just my view :)

EDIT: Not to mention I didn't see a single one of the Utah trails linking back to RME as you agreed to do. You really do like to claim every one else's work as your own, don't you.

I'm not claiming to get credit for googles work, or RME Trails to be honest I was afraid to use your data, and I haven't used it, I missing a lot of your trails. Traildamage.com said I could use there GPS coordinates and link to them and that is it all I did. As for who ever built it I just feel that I might have inspired them, not that they wouldn't have though of it or created it but that I was the guy on here saying check out what I did.

what I meant by the code is that I'm just upset, because I wanted to have tons of website, magazine, events, and whatever someone could think of, and have them integrate into my site. Now I just feel like everyone's just push me to the side and moving on with out me. When I first started the project I had a few magazine express interest in publicizing the site which made me jump for joy, and now I haven't heard from them. I have sorta of found a way into one of the mags now but sure isn't the promise I had originally hoped for. O well at least I'm still very young.

Don't give up. Your site is the only site out there that has that many trails listed in one place (that I can think of). We've had our trail repository for quite a while now and I will admit that your idea sparked with what we currently had. It made sense to try the google maps api and tie it into our existing database of Utah trails.

There was no intention of stepping on your toes (or anybody else's for that matter). We have no desire of putting trails on the map that are outsite of Utah, with the exception of some very frequented trails on the West site of Colorado.

As far as the code, I made it a very important point to not re-use your code when building our map. I searched out a couple tutuorials on the map api and it seems we used the same resources. There are quite a few mapping sites out there that use the api the same way. (http://www.trails.com/trailfinder/browsebymap/?statecode=UT for example)

I know Trails.com exist, they're the main reason I made mine, people shouldn't have to pay to use it, Maps belong like TV, free to the users and the company that want to make profit can pay for it. Their is Offroadatlas too but I don't like the load every time I move the map or the fact that there is hundreds of clubs all over the map makes it difficult to even find the trails.

Any chance you the coder around here Herzog?

Got to say those Park Icons are a great Idea I was about to create something similar and now I'm not so sure I would want to because you did it. Then again it does look good and is the USA's park images.

I think the only objection anyone here would have is just that you credit the person that took the time to map whatever trail....
I can personally vouch for Herzog's ethics and assure you no intentional shanghai'ing is going on. :D

Honestly, if you want to use those icons as well, feel free to. I can send you the .png files. I created them directly from the US Forest Service & BLM map markers.

I agree with you that information like trails maps and information should be freely available. :)

well I have my own http://www.schwarttzy.com/advertise.html, but I do like your design.... better , Well if you wouldn't mind I would like to try them and see works for my site. If I do use them any chance you could give me a page to add to my links to you?

I am in the process of unrolling some new feature and thought I might get the word out. I am currently unrolling forums ( http://www.schwarttzy.com/forums/ ) that will be linked to each and every trail, which by the way I have 201+ and have about 25 more to add soon. The purpose of these forums is to allow people to submit there Photos, videos, experiences, trail conditions, events, and shout outs to get runs setup.

Obviously I have not though of everything and it will be constantly changing, so I have know Idea of whats going to work and not. Also there is the things I haven't thought of so through them at me if you can.

And be the first to add your photos and what not on your favorite trails.

later,
Schwarttzy.

My only suggestion right now is if you're serious about the forums, get off phpbb and buy a license for vBulletin. I just went through converting a site from phpbb to vBulletin and it had a ton of little quirks involved with it. Phpbb is good for giving the script kiddies somewhere to play but if you want a secure and solid forum, then skip phpbb and get vBulletin.

x2 That is a mistake that I have made too. Free is not better. :D And vbulliten offers a lot for the price.

I know Trails.com exist, they're the main reason I made mine...

Did they try and call you out for using their idea as your own inspiration?

If you're trying to learn to use web based api's or google maps specifically, then you're doing great and keep playing with your site. If you want to have the ultimate online resource for trail maps and offroad data, then give up now and find a new dream.
