Given a decent base vehicle and about the same $$ for mods, what one would be the best overall off roader for this SLC/Moab and possibly a little street driving? Discuss ;)

I'm not a pro on ether one of these rigs but i thinkk it's a toss up if you get the scout make sure to get the one with D44's front and rear some came with a D30 in the front. I'm not sure but i think the scrambler is the same???? But i think it would be easier to get parts for the scrambler.

The scrambler is going to have a Model 20 rear and a Dana 30 front, while the Scout (if post '73 or so) will have Dana 44's front and rear. The Scrambler will have a Dana 300 transfer case, while only rare 1980 Scouts will have one. Scouts have a reputation for being big and heavy, but I don't know the actual weight of either one.

Have you thought about cost? A scout is going to be tremendously cheaper than a scrambler.

pretty much what I was going to say,

For example: say you have $5k to spend to get teh vehicle and fix it up...well with the scrambler you are going to get a scrmler in decent shape and MAYBE a lift kit. The scout you are going to be able to buy the scout do whatever you want to do to it and probably still have money...but then you run into the issue that others have pointed out, the scout is very limited to what is available as a bolt on items. If you want to fab then it will probably be sixes for build-up costs but the initial cost is going to be much higher on the scrambler...

My opinion is I would do the scramber because, IMO, the scout is just plain ugly:rofl:

I know that the Scout II will be less $ for the vehicle and they are all over the place vs. a scrambler. They do have more roubust frames and drive train but weigh over 6000 LBS! I like the Jeep more but it will be easier to find a Scout in decent condition. Has any one seen a Scout wheeling? Does the weight and the roundish body hinder it? They do have a 100 inch wheelbase which is nice with big tires :)

Get a scrambler. Then find a scout for 200.00 to 500.00 and take the 44's and scrap the rest, hell they wiegh so much you probably get 100.00 + in scrap. :D

Not sure but isn't a jeep driver side drop and the scout passanger side drop? I could be wrong? :D

Alright Fawkers....errr I mean Pooheads :p!

Easy on the scout bashing. Fugly is not always a bad thing. Scouts are cheap and stout. you can get a V8 that will easy turn 200K,TF727,D20 or D300 and D44s for 500 bucks. The frame is fully boxed. the body will be rusted (most likely). Wheel base at 100".

I think scramblers and SII's are sixes as far as wheelability.

The parts thing is somewhat true, you don't have a lot of sissy chrome bolt ons for a scout. The Scrambler prolly makes the best "stock" daily driver because Scout axles had 0* castor.

If you have fab skills, go with the Scout.

If you have extra money and like Chrome and bolt ons go scrambler

If you like to rock crawl skip both and get something lighter.

When you are talking 5000+ llbs weight will be an issues, for really steep stuff.
Other than that works great.

What dose the Model 20 compare to like a D30??????

The 20 has several weak areas, two piece axles, tubes can twist in the center section, and the center section is just weak. Upside they have a bigger ring gear then a 44. But that doesn't make up for its short comings.

I say go for the scrambler... I own 2 :D .... Parts are way easier to find they dont weigh much more than a cj 7. Have a 103 inch wheel base. The model 20 can have 1 pice shafts installed and in all the years ive pounded this axle (with 1 pice shafts) I have only broken it once.....
Plus you get a dana 300 instead of the dana 20 transfer case that came with all the scouts except in 1980. (good luck in finding one of those)
If your worried about the 30 front go find a scout 2 and grab the 44 out of the front. its a simple swap.
Oh yeah and as long as were on the subject when your engine finally dies its alot easier to find chevy swaps for a jeep and cheaper to... Or find any old 258, 304, 360, ect jeep motor and they swap right in with no adaptors...

I have a Scrambler. And Love it. But I've probably put more money than brains (actually, $5 is more than the brains I have, I've definatley sank too much money in it) in to the beast. SOA on custom 44's (bah!! from Advanced 4 Wheel drive - I won't do that again) w/ a shackle reversal and wrangler springs. I love the set up, but I think I could have spent my money better else where.

So I have a qestion for ya. Unless I missed it in the post, what are your intentions for your vehicle? If it's for looks as well as wheeling, I'd go w/ the CJ-8. But I've never been a big fan of the Scout look. If you're looking to put together a great wheeling rig, find a Chevy K30 pickup! I've seen a couple that were less than a Scrambler and they aready come w/ a 14 bolt rear, 60 upfront, bullet proof 205 tcase and a 454 motor! Man, you're almost ready to go w/o mods! Lift and tires and you're there.

If I did it over again, I think that's the way I'd go.
Just my $.02.

like said before , if you got fab skills go Scout... If you don't, go run bolts on a jeep ;) other than that they are very similar rigs when coming to wheelin...

On engine's , I love my chevy swap, very easy since all electrical is Delco already..

And yes you can pick up rust free scouts for a few hundred bucks, my brothers scout was 200 and it don't have a drop of rust, the tub on my scout was a hundred bucks and was almost rust free, very easy to fix..

and the weight issue, I doubt there is a huge difference between the two, think the tag on mine stock was 4400 pnds...

Cost.. That all depends on how much you do yourself. I'd like to see you find a Scrambler for the same price I paid for my Scout II... FREE :p
