Scout Specific?

I know there are a few scout guys on this sight, hopefully they will have a response.

I may be trading my jeep for a 1979 scout. Are there any scout specific vehicle problems to look out for? Or are they pretty much the same as pretty much any other vehicle in the general aspect...

Ya, electrical is probably the biggest issue. I would recommend getting a completely new harness from either EZ Wire or Painless.

Okay, the one I have had my eye on is actually rebuilt with all Chevy stuff including a 5.7L V8 TBI. Im pretty sure the harness has been replaced, and getting parts (Other than body and such) shouldn't be too hard due to the switch.

As for rust. I'm pretty decent at replacing panels and doing body work, so that shouldn't be too big of a deal either.

Well I'm getting pretty excited for this.

so other than electrical, and the obvious Rust, and Scout specific issues I should be concerned about?

That it is still a wanna be Early Bronco. :greg:

IIRC, the Scout came out before the Bronco, SOOOOO, I guess a Bronco is a wannabe SCOUT!!! ;)

Go get this thing and start posting up some pics. Glad to see more people are seeing the light and selling their jeeps to by Scouts.

Scouts were out in what 1962? and the Bronco didn't come out until 66-67? I sure miss my 1965 scout. I always have been annoyed when people think the bronco came first.

Here's your first "scout specific" problem that you should be concerned about: it's not a Scout.

Chevy stuff including a 5.7L V8 TBI

Check all the wiring connectors at the firewall, these aren't always replaced in a swap. If the original bulkhead connectors are still there, replace them asap with something else. Here's where the creativity that Bear mentioned comes into play.

Check all the other wiring.

Install a grounding strap from the engine block to the body.

Check the rag joint on between the steering column and steering box input shaft. Unless it's been replaced recently, it's possible it will kill you.

Look into a "straight steer brace". Not sure how the swap is setup, but you want some extra frame support between the rails at the steering box.

Check the vapor separator behind the access panel where the stock spare tire is located. Make sure any broken fittings/hoses are resolved.

If you still have the stock gauges, you'll want to build a solid state CVR (constant voltage regulator).

I'd rather push a Toyota than drive a cornbinder!! But then again I do have square headlights so who's the a$$ now?

Bear is right though.. There is just no aftermarket parts out there so most everything will be hard to find or custom.

The world is our aftermarket. I'm glad I don't build my j**p by picking bolt-on junk from a catalog. That's the j**p thing, I'm happy not to understand. :)

You can buy bumpers, sliders, racks, frame components, engine swap kits, fuel delivery, trans component upgrades, t-case component upgrades, wheels, tires, lights, wiring kits, suspension kits, body parts, most trim, soft tops, and even IH floor mats. The list goes on and on. I don't think there's a bolt-on snorkel kit available though.

 Ugh... pass. Chevy parts dont belong on farm equiptment

Seriously though IH anything lasts forever and is easy to service, repair, upgrade or modify. The only gripe I have about the Scouts is weight and that is a small price to pay imo. I like them a lot and my next rig could very well be a Terra Scout with a 6.9/7.3 IH diesel.

I found a place that sells most of the general scout parts, I think betewwn them and custom parts I should be alright. Byt I defanetly agree with you about everything you wanting to do being bolt on. It really takes away from making your rig your own, now its building it from others.
I think it should be allright.

the place is http://scoutparts.com/

Your scout is awesome, I think seeing some of your build/upgrade threads are what made me want to get one.

I don't know what it is about them, the more I look at them the more I want one.

just so you know Scoutparts has got to be the most expensive place to get scout parts from.. check out Binderbullitin and the binder forums to find the good places to get parts.
