Are there any shooting restrictions in the AF canyon area? Obviously I won't be setting up across from Timpanogas Caves or near any other established campsites. I was thinking somewhere up near Mineral Basin.
Supergper said:I'd go to their website and find out what the regs are. There will be limitations because its a National Forest but each National Forest has different regulations. Some say you can't in any wilderness areas, some say you must be XXX yards away from any developed area, etc. I'd either call the ranger station or go to their website http://www.fs.fed.us/r4/uinta/ and search around there. Better safe than sorry..."...but sir, my buddy said it was alright"
with what kind of gun?muleskinner said:I know we used to shoot up there all the time also. (I also know Wyoming lets you shoot prairie dogs.... LOTS and LOTS) I just got back, and killed about a hundred today longest shot was 466 yrds with about a 20mph cross wind.

Love to shoot dogs up there. Oh and did you have a range finder? Not doubting you...just wondering how you came up with 466 without a rangefinder.
Personaly I love the 22-250. I can not think of a better wepon for dogs.

Meat_ said:Have you tried the Varminator 's? I still cry everytime I think about them not coating the varmit bullets anymore
BCGPER said:Personally, due to the heavy use, I'd never shoot up there, anywhere... No, I'm not a tree hugger, but that canyon is loaded with em. Plenty of places elsewhere you can find "moving" targets, and not pi$$ anyone off.
muleskinner said:Yea, I actually had problems with them coming apart out of the muzzle. The pieces took out my chrony too. I called Barnes and took two of my .243's to them to test. They casted the chambers on both and shot them and said I'm the second person to have this problem. They were really cool and gave me some new bullets. The problem bullets were 58gr and they gave me some 72gr Varminators, which shoot much better. (The only problem I have is my BDC dial is made for 4190fps and the 72's are at 3500fps so I cant dial the yardage) I'm shooting the Barnes xxxshock 180's in my .300 Ultramag and with a bc of .552 they are extremely accurate. Try them if you liked the velocity of the coated bullets, they are about the same.
Edit: sorry for the hijack Hicky
Been thinking of getting a .243 barrel for my Encore.muleskinner said:.243 w/ 55gr balistic tips, chronied at 4190fps. (And I killed probably 20 with my .17HMR) 1500yrd Rangefinder. I like the 22-250 for the plain and simple fact that my father and two brothers have been loading and researching what works and what doesn't with them for years. It was easy to drop into something that people close to me knew lots about.
BTW your .17HMR? What is it? I have a Savage .17 that I love...at least until the wind blows.. Or for that matter a slight breeze :-\
