Looking at a newish truck in the 07 range. both mega cabs pretty much the same except one is gas and one is diesel. The hemi is an auto and the cummins is a manual. I had a 2000 cummins and loved it. are the new ones good?

I'd go with the cummins. The mega cab is a heavy truck, and I don't think you'd be happy with the hemi in it. The diesel will get better mileage, and move the truck around much better. Plus once you hook up a trailer, you will love the diesel much more. In 07.5 they went to the 6.7. Is yours the 5.9 or the 6.7?

Most people will tell you that they like the 5.9 over the 6.7... The 6.7 has way too many EPA gidgets on it, and don't seem to be as reliable. Mileage wise, the 5.9 would be better as well (no EGR, diesel particulate filter and all that other crap.) I've heard mileage claims in the 15-18mph range around town, and up to 20 on the road.

Better mileage with the diesel than with the Hemi, and more power too (plus, WAY more potential power :))

And if they are like the other diesels (ford & gmc) with the epa junk on them, you'll get much worse mileage. Way to go epa!

I have an 07 Dodge with the 5.9 and love it. I get 18 mpg in town and 22 mpg on the highway (you have to keep it below 80 to get these numbers). I also run with the Edge chip on level 4 unless I am towing a heavy load. I looked at a 6.7 and they get worse mileage.

Cummins! You can expect to see mid to high teens in town. 20 mpg and even a little more is the norm on the highway empty almost every time out. Some folks will tell you that 25 - 28 mpg is possible. It may be but it is the exception not the norm. Also, don't trust the over head computer. They are all optimistic at best. If you want to see great MPG's then keep your RPM's inbetween 1600 and 1800. Let me know if you are wanting to hot rod your Cummins. I can point you in the right direction.

Converted Oil Burner
Just traded an '06 5.9L Quadcab for an '09 6.7L Megacab.
Seat of the pants dyno says a little more power, the computer says 20.1 MPG with a 1000 miles, 50/50 Highway/Street (read: mega heavy right foot).
Will NEVER give up my diesels.
Dad's 2500 HD Silverado gasser gets 12 MPG standing still, full out, or even being tossed of a cliff.
As for the EPA stuff no opinion yet.

This is kind of like comparing boxers VS the tighty whiteys. Only YOU can decide. You need to evaluate what you're going to do with it, and go from there. I will say the the 6.7 is a dog, and you couldn't give me one. It's not just the Dodge, all of the newer EPA'd to death oil burners are having the issue. The earlier 5.9's do have thier issues, but still a damn good engine.

The diesel VS gas thing is simple. The diesel, any of the big three, will be going strong at 250K miles. If you keep your junk that long, the diesel may be the way to go. Personally, I won't keep a truck that long because the rest of the vehicle is falling apart anyway. As far as towing, hands down the oil burner as well. Fuel mileage to me is a wash, and I've had plenty of both to compare. What you lose in MPG on the gasser just offsets the higher initial cost to buy the truck, and the higher routine maintenance cost. For a daily driver/short commuter, my choice will always be a gas engine.

Oh, on the newer Dodge look at the front end VERY close. The newer Cummins have a major issue with death wobble (I haven't heard of any gassers having it). There is a factory update available. You can see it very easily by the monster tie rod and such that they install. They won't come out and say it's is an issue, but if you complain about the wobble they will install the upgrade. Most dealers will charge you for the re-alignment though.

Well I think I am going to go with a diesel. I don't think the mega cab is going to work out, but I found a 04 cummins quad cab we are going to go look at and 99 percent sure we are going to get it. we are driving all the way out to vernal to look. So I guess if anyone needs something hauled back let me know.

Excellent choice, the 04's were a damn good truck. If you can find a clean one, I think you'll be much happier than with a newer one.

Manual or automatic? People seem to have trouble getting the automatics to hold up to the diesel motor. If you can find a manual in good condition you should consider it.
