Should I buy it?

UNSTUCK

But stuck more often.
My work is selling one of their old trucks. I can pick it up for $2000. Its a 2002 f350 srw. Four door Lariat (or whatever it is called) Leather, heated seats ect....
Anyways, it has 250k on it. The bed was damaged so they put on a flat bed with small toolboxes down each side, which I didn't care for at first, but it's really growing on me now. It's all set up for a gooseneck or bumper pull with a brake controller and such.
The leather is showing wear, but is not cracked all the way through yet. The rear seat is pretty good. Over all the inside is in good shape.
The batteries are dead so I haven't ran it. I'm going to try to start it tomorrow. I'm just wondering what I can expect out of it? As a rule Im a Chevy guy so I'm going out on a limb here. I have no idea how it was cared for, but I'd guess not as well as I'd like. I checked KBB and the trade in was like $10k so I thought I'd already be money ahead.
What are your thoughts? Is there a general rule as to how long they will last? Maybe another 50k? If it would last two years that would be great.

What engine?

Doesn't really matter, it's worth it.

If it's a Powerstroke, then it's probably got some good life left in it anyway--I'll be really disappointed if my 7.3 doesn't make it to 300K without any real issues.

I pretty much did the same thing last fall. I bought a 1999 4 door powerstroke lariat from our company with 241k on the odometer, only thing is, I knew this truck since it was almost new and so I knew how it spent ever day of it's life, what has been fixed and what would need fixing in the future. The big difference is I paid $6,500 for mine. So I'd say 2k is a good deal if it runs okay.

Well, with two battery chargers and a shot of either it fired up today. The glow plugs must not be working. Anyways I let it run for a while and all seemed okay. There was noise coming from the turbo that sounded like the suction tube had a hole in it but I couldn't find anything. I reved the motor all the way up and blew out a ton of black smoke. I cleared pretty fast and the noise went away. So I hope the turbo was just loaded up. I gave it a quick once over and took it for a drive. I was very pleased with how it drove. I was surprised at the power that it has. It shifted well and didn't seem to hesitate. The tags are out dated so I didn't go to far. Just around the block.
When I got back I pulled it in over the pit in the shop to look under it. All I could find that was bad was a loose sway bar mount and the front drive shaft that is about to explode. I'm sure the rear main seal is leaking or something back there and the power steering seems to be leaking and whining a bit. Other then that it looks good.
I think I'll try for $1500. :D

BUY IT!!!! There's a common oil leak up on top that makes everyone think the rear main leaks. Very happy with my 2002 f*rd X, wouldn't mind an F350 crew, and I'm a chevy guy too, but I'm pretty fond of the Dudge and f*rd trucks now.

Do you know more about where the leak on top comes from?

Various places on top of the engine. HPOP lines, various stuff.

There are different write-ups on the interweb, basically you just need to climb up and look around on top of the engine with a flashlight, or put a dye in the oil and use a uv light. Behind the fuel filter, under the turbo, etc.

The stuperdoodie is a great truck, you'll enjoy it. I'd buy another one in a second (considering that my eXcursion is the same thing). I'd love a crew cab with a utility box, and put a sexy little front bumper on it, leveling kit, 315's, 4" exhaust, etc.

Update boys!!

Looks like it's mine for a whopping $1500. On top of that, the money will be going into the shop lunch fund. So I will be buying myself (and the rest of the guys) lunch to pay for it! That's lunch money that I spend anyways!

I'll post pics once I have full posession of it.

Now does anyone want to give me the same kind of deal on a trailer?

Just what I was thinking. But because my work is giving me this handout instead of just selling it off, I feel I should drive it for a least a little while.

I'm waiting for the tittle to come from our main office then it will be going home with me. This week I hope.
