Chris & Tara (Yellow Bronco & Bronco Mama) invited Catherine & I on an easy, but incredible trip to and above Silverton, by way of Cinnamon Pass over to Lake City and then up Engineer Pass and back to Silverton. Chris was driving their Dodge which usually tows the Early Bronco and Catherine & I were in the 4Runner.

I've been above Ouray before, but this trip was new to me. Chris & Tara know the area well, it seemed like we had paid guides as they mentioned facts & neat figures about the area, it's mines & mountains over the 2 way radio.

After wandering around Silverton for a bit, we headed up to find a quiet spot for lunch. On the way we passed under this incredible tram system with ore cars. Apparently the tram goes from the processing mill, over the river & up the mountain for 2 miles.

Crossing some of the winter run-off on the way to Eureka. The rest of the pics are from Eureka where back in the mining days 10,000 people lived & worked.

Next we traveled up to Animas Forks which sit's at 11,300 feet. This small town has several mines around it and the homes are in pretty decent shape considering their age & how harsh the winters must be.

The road continues upward & forks to either Cinnamon Pass or Engineer Pass. We headed up Cinnamon Pass after checking out the little town.

Our dog Daisy was having a blast on the glaciers... she even made some yellow snow! :D We then began the descent down towards Lake City, passed thru a large snow drift that had been plowed to allow travel. It was neat to see the Arctic Tundra, it's nothing more than 3-4" layer of sandy dirt, on top of the hard rock.

On the way down we found this opened mine and a large machine of some sort. It looked like a steam driven compress or or something. There was a wheel & pistion type of assembly, not really sure what it did.

The mine looked very intresting... scary, yet intresting. We didn't have any flashlights with us, so going in to explore didn't happen.

After reaching Lake City we took a little break, grabbed some snacks and then headed towards the road up Engineer Pass. At this point in time it was getting late in the day, so Chris opened up the Cummins and hauled butt up the graded road to the summit. We just tried to keep up... ;)

Just before reaching the summit there was another huge snow drift that you pass thru. Seeing that really made me wonder how much snow those mountains get during winter.

Finally at 12,800 feet we made the summit. The sun was going down fast & the temperature was falling. At the summit it was 50 degrees but a small wind made it feel much cooler.

Last couple of pics coming down from the summit.

This was an incredible trip, I can't wait to get out there again. Huge thanks to Chris, Tara & the kids for showing us around, I can see why you guys would spend nearly every weekend up there.

those pics are awsome! what was the temps like up that high?

The pics are cool, but you really have to see it in person to take it all in. The tempreature wasn't too bad when the sun was out, probably mid to low 70's at Animas Forks, mid 60's at the summit of Cinnamon Pass, then 50 degrees at the summit of Engineer Pass, which we made at about 8 pm.

Wow, those pictures are great! It's funny, we've spent so much time up there yet it never ceases to amaze me with the beauty. I especially love the view from on top of Engineer Pass. All you can see are mountains on top of mountains and it feels like you're on top of the world! We sure had a great time, thanks for coming with!

Hey Greg... we are arriving on a Thurs, and heading out Sunday, giving us 2 full days on the trail. Where did you guys stay? A bunch from our group are staying at the Ouray KOA, I might end up there?

You've got me all excited...
