Silverton, CO; Cinnamon & Engineer Pass, 6/11/06

That's a beautiful road. Not terribly difficult, but there are a couple spots that will stop a stock truck.
Yes, in an earlier crazy life pre-bronco, we took Chris's crew cab, long bed Ford F350 up there. Ironically enough, it did quite well until the final rocky hill before the wall at the end.

Not right off the top of my head, but Charles Wells has a CO wheeling trails book that has Poughkeepsie and all the other passes in it. I know Chris has found some stuff on the web though, I'll ask him.

Ordered it yesterday... :D Heard it was the book to have on the area. I have never been, fortunately some of the group I am going with have been several times.

Have you (or anyone else reading) ridden the narrow gauge train in the area?

Thanks for all the help! :D

Good call on the book, it is definitely helpful if you don't know the area. I have ridden the train before and it is an amazing experience. They don't call it a narrow gauge for no reason! It is very pretty, but I would recommend just riding from Durango to Silverton. It's a long day to do the round trip thing and you're only allotted like 2 hours in Silverton.

You're welcome!

Sound advice. I don't know if we will even have time to ride the train, but I would love to check it out, I have heard rave reveiws about it. How long is the Durango to Silverton ride approx.? Thanks again!

Yes! I would absolutely recommend riding it! Split the ticket with someone else though. If you are camping in/around Silverton get up early in the morning, and drive down to Durango. Leave your truck at the train station (McDonald's, if I remember right), take the train up. give your ticket to the person you are splitting it with in Silverton, they'll ride the train back down and drive your truck back up to you. We rode the train up, and it took several extra hours because they had to fix it just outside Durango, and it was still well worth it. Someone else rode the train down and picked up our car.

I think it's about 4 to 5 hours. The drive from Durango to Silverton is about an hour and WOW is it beautiful. Also, if you want to check out the actual trains, they hang out in Silverton from about noon to 3ish.
