Slipping transmission in 04 Dodge 2500

I've got a 2004 Dodge 2500 diesel and the auto transmission slips sometimes and is sometimes slow to go into gear. Some guy told me this is a common problem in these particular trucks and not to worry about fixing it. I call BS. Similar or conflicting experience anyone?

I am having a similar experience right now! and it's costing me a bunch of money to fix: it's called transmission wear in my case, and I need a rebuild.

BUT in other news: the 98 47re attached to MY Cummins had some valve body mods to keep line pressure up at low rpms. Apparently that's an issue due to the torque curve? Anyway the PO, who I'd trust to tell me the skinny, said it helped after his rebuild.

Your mileage may vary.

I thought you would have fixed that by now cause of your geologist wages :D

I had an 01 that started to slip at 40k because I had a box on it I was told that if I didn't address the issue I could possibly be looking at a new trans cause the converter would grenade and take the rest of the trans with it.
I took the truck to a local shop and had a converter and a valve body put in it and drove the truck for another 48K without any problems then sold the truck (didnt need 3 cummins trucks) and bought my TJ.

I believe in 04 they turned up the line pressure but I am not sure if that was while they still had the 555 motor or not but in any case I dont think the trans should be slipping i would have it checked. my.02

You bought a truck?

I don't know specifics on that trans, but those symptoms can be caused by a dirty filter in ALL auto transmissions.

It has an edge computer chip thing, a 2" lift, 35's, and a some other stuff. The fluid has bubbles in it, so I know there is some kind of problem. I just find it hard to believe that this is a standard thing on all 04 Dodge's.

Yup the Dodge auto is a piece of work I dont think I have heard anyone yet say ooh get one with an auto at least in a diesel Dodge. I dont know what the truck was used for, how many miles are on it or if it has an Edge EZ or Juice Module but at this point the tranny needs some attention.
I have a 48RE in my Dodge with a Cummins 600 motor I dont have any mods done to it and it goes into gear and shifts great, Ive been told if I leave it alone and change the trans fluid per DCs recommendation the trans should last well into the 100k mile range. I dont believe it but thats what I am told.

If you plan on pulling the Edge stuff off and going back to stock you would probably be ok with a stock trans. If it were my truck and I needed to rebuild the trans I would look in to a Suncoast,DTT,Gorend trans just to name a few and leave the Edge stuff on because you will have the advantage of the added fuel mileage and you will have a strong enough trans to handle the power when your done.

x2, the dodge auto is junk compared to their competition. even in stock form with mild towing dont expect the auto behind the 5.9L cummins 6bt to survive for more than 80k miles, if that far. you can inprove the tranny to survive 120-160k miles before it needs another rebuild but for about the same price you could swap to a manual that will survive for much, much longer.

if your dead set on an auto you can get one of the aftermarket upgraded tranny's like mentioned or you could swap to either a 4l80e or allison, both are stronger than what you currently have but will require a bellhousing adapter and reprogramming the computer.
