Sloppy Tilt column, Jeep CJ Questions

Is there really no easy GM swaps for these columns. It seems that if you cant get it jeep you go look at gm. I scrounged the local junk yard and found out that jummys and sonomas both share a similar steering column with wranglers and cherokees. Was there a chevy/gmc counterpart to that found in 80's Cj's?

Here's my issues:

1. Those things take forever to rebuild! I feel that my 4 torx bolts are sloppy in the threading. Somewhat scared that after another rebuild it will only hold up for a couple of months.

2. I want to purchase a working column and then sell my current for a discounted price. I have noticed that on Quadratec there are some that are almost $700, Hot rod websites have chevy ones for $300. I just am not sure on the swap-ability of these columns.

3. I want to spend $500+/- on a Cj that has a decent tub, windshield frame, running motor and a(of course) steering column. I found one but the tub was shot, the windshield frame was see through and the column was demolished with a crow-bar. Everything else was fine.

Any insights would be awesome. I'd like to make something happen before the Southwest Crawlfest in two weeks. I know the simplest way would be to just rebuild it but I've been burned and don't want to go down that road again, if I can avoid it.

Anyone with parts, tips, or name is Tacoma please post up.

Mine was out of a mid 70's Monte Carlo, it was pretty much a plug and play swap. The Monte part had the shifter on the column, which is what I wanted. Plenty of GM's of that era had floor shifts, so finding one shouldn't be too hard.

Keep in mind, you're installing an identical column to what you're removing. Sooner or later even the replacement GM column will suffer from the loose screw syndrome.

They're GM columns as far as I could tell. I've probably got one from an FSJ still.... Want me to check? :D

When I redo them, red loctite. Crappy jop that isn't all that hard to do, just a PITA.

I'll check the garage and get in touch tomorrow.
