I am putting a small block chevy in my jeep. I am looking for opinions on carburetors. I don't have the money for fuel injection. Who makes the best carb for off road?

A solid Quadrajet is pretty tough to beat off road. I have heard good things about Holley's 'Truck Avenger', though. No personal experience with that.

I have ran a junk yard Qjet and now a brand new(3years ago) truck avenger. The Q jet beats the Holley in every category. The Holley was one of the worst purchases I have made. Not that it is a bad carb, but I did like my junk yard Q jet better and the Holley cost me around $400 that I should have put into FI.
If you chose to go with a used Q jet I can give ya some pointers of what to look out for(lose butterflies, ext) and how to set them up(vents and internal leaks, ext).

Qjets rock, and they're cheap at the junkyard, not to mention WIDELY available.

That said, junkyard TBI isn't that much, either. Save them pennies, yo.

why not TBI?

Cheap, simple, reliable, readily available, you can retro-fit it on older SBC's....... so on and so fourth...

I don't think that I'll ever wheel with a carb again.

not to familiar with the Throttle bodies. I have a 307, what year TBI will work with it. What vehicle would I look for to get one that would work.

Get one with the O2 sensor in the exhaust manifold, too.

GM TBI is about as close to foolproof as you can get. Everything but the O2 sensor is in the manifold, and the ECM is easy to get out of the truck: unplug the sensors, and pull the harness into the cab.

And then, install on other SBC. :D

OH! forgot: you'll have to drill out the center manifold bolts to fit the earlier heads, but it is not a big deal.

TBI is the way to go...

If you have to use a carb you can't beat the Quadra-Jet. I've tried about every carb out there and they all suck. The Quadra-Jet just sucks a whole lot less than the rest.

UNSTUCK

But stuck more often.
I picked up my whole engine with harness and everything for a grand. It was a smoken deal though. But after all the junk I went through with the carter on my 4.2, I didn't even think about "upgrading" to another carb. Then when I found the deal on this TPI, I was all over it. Now I get better gas mileage then most jeeps too. I never stall, and it always starts right up, no matter what angle I'm parked at. Before if it died while I was at an angle, I'd have to roll it back down to level ground to start it.
