Smaller Toy Haulers...Do they Exist?

With all the racing and riding I've been doing and all of the other trips we have planned for our family we are looking at getting a toy hauler. It was so much easier at the Knolls race having somewhere for my boy to hang out and keep himself entertained. He still had a blast outside but being able to haeve hime take a nap and get clean and contained some of the time makes it a bit more enjoyable.

Something that can fit a few bikes and maybe a rzr, doen't have to be at the same time though. We like the idea of a 5th wheel with the separate "master suite" up front but I'm having a hard time finding a smaller 5th wheel. Something in the 28' or less range. Anyone have experience with camp trailer brands and know where to look or have somebody they have liked? We've looked all over online and the searches for trailers are crappy.

Maybe I just don't know where to look.

If you at thinking 5th wheel with a garage, you probably will be looking in the 30'+ range. If you are looking for an open design than you can probably find one in the 26' range. One thing to keep in mind is that with the open configuration will not give you a slide in the living area.

It it is nearly impossible to find one with everything you want, so decide which features are most important based on the amount you will be in it. I never thought I would buy a trailer like we have but when you spend as much time in it as we do, we decided to make it comfortable.

A rzr is only 64" wide by 119" long. It's not super important that it can fit a Utv, especially since I don't have one at the moment.

Chance, can you find out what brand and model that trailer is when you get a chance? ;) No pun intended.

I would obviously like to have a garage but it is not a necessity at this time. I am fine with the open design. My wife wants it closed off. But the budget also won't allow for something with a garage and slide either. And if I went too big then I would have to upgrade my truck also and she doesn't want me to do that.

We we know we can't find everything we want in one. The fifth wheels seem much nicer with the separate master area and a little taller. Just can't find an awesome layout with a bumper pull.

They have them as small as a popup with a place on a longer tongue that will hold 2 ATVs. You can get 20+ footers with the same tongue arrangement where the toys are on the front making the fuel and stuff outside of the living quarters. You can buy regular toy haulers from 18' bumper pull to behemoth fith wheels My wife has been educating me on them because she wants one. I think generator and AC is important as well as good sleeping arrangements for at least 6. The smaller ones limit you as far as how many bikes. One friend has a 22' and we can get 5 bikes in it. Another has a 30' and we can get tons of stuff in it. The smaller ones you can get in tighter places but the bigger ones are really nice for those longer trips and as mentioned, slide outs. My BIL has a 30' bumper pull. That thing is a pig on the back of a bumper. The tail wags the dog for sure. If you go that big, 5th wheel is the way to go.

The more I look, for me anyway, I like the 24' models. I am more interested in a place to sleep that's dry and a place to shower after a day of riding. I need a generator, AC, Direct TV and fuel on board and not so big and heavy that I have to buy a bigger truck.

As with any toy, you have to justify it by using it. I have thrown out to my wife that we could rent one for $100/night or less. We have property in Bear Lake we want a cabin on so that's where my thoughts are right now. We boat a lot but probably my favorite place to ride is the Beaver Creek/Highline Trail area

I looked awhile back for a short 5th wheel toy hauler. The shortest I found that I can remember about was a Forest River Work & Play.

I currently have a 21' Forest River Shockwave bumper pull, 2010 model. While the build quality wasn't the greatest, the price was right, and honestly it has been a very good trailer. I've been living in it 4-5 nights a week for over a 1.5yrs straight (stupid work), and have spend numerous other 2mo+ campouts related to work. The back gets used as a garage for the street bike. The only failure I've had so far is the fuel pump for the toy tank locked up.

Yes! With the jeep on the flatbed and our truck being a 3500, we wanted the smallest and lightest trailer possible. I didn't want or need a toyhauler, but after shopping around hard-sided trailers in the sub 20' range are cramped little buggers. I was never able to figure out why they try and enable sleeping for 7 people in such a small trailer. With our dogs in crates, and grill and whatever junk we wanted to carry we decided a toy hauler was the ticket for us. We ended up picking up a 2008 18' toyhauler, barely used for around $10k.

The bed is a big pull down above the "garage" area, and there are two benches that line either side for sitting that also fold down into beds. The front is a full bathroom with separate shower. It's a great layout, and I don't feel there were any compromises for it being so small. It actually feels bigger than my in laws 24'er with a pull out, again because of the open layout. A standard side by side would squeeze in there, probably not one of the new wider style ones, however.

We picked up a star craft launch extreme last year. We really wanted a toy hauler but since 80k for one that will fit a rig in it was out of the question we got one that will go about any where. Yes it's small. 17' But if we take the four wheelers we just haul them in the truck. And we have to take two trucks to haul the jeep.(disadvantage) but, What we found was the small size allowed us to camp away from the big fifth wheels. Also we only sleep in it unless it's raining. Our second choice was the living light series. Made in Canada and all tig welded aluminum. They are tough as nails. Stay away from camp master.

Problem with the open design is that you will have the smell of gas and oil in your living area. To some that may not be an issue. To the wife and little ones it is a huge deal. Not that I would try and convince you of buying something you don't want but, if the family isn't comfortable then you will be flying solo. Buy once, and buy what will work for the family rather than just buying what will work for now. Nothing is more frustrating than having to buy again.

But if you've seen my past track record, I like buying and selling and trying new things.

I dont one want to have to load the truck and trailer separately every time. I'd like to just fold the ramp down, load it up and go. Many people I've talked to have said that if you travel with the windows open and don't run it at all inside then the smell is really non existent. Is like to pull up to a camp spot, just roll the bikes out and go ride. Rather than having to unhook the truck, pull the truck forward, roll the bikes out, then back the truck back up.

Im not stuck on a 5th wheel I just like the more secluded master area, and the 5th wheel makes the length that you're towing shorter.

I had a large 5th wheel toy hauler with out garage for about 3 years. I never had a single issue with smell and neither did my wife. IMO don't use it as a storage unit for your toys and the gas smell wont be a problem at all.

I'm not a pop up trailer kind of guy. I like getting there and taking hardly anytime to set up. I also like the idea of having my toys inside and out of the weather and I'd much rather work on it inside than outside.

I thought about bout modding a trailer but I know I would never complete it and I couldn't get it to where it needs to be quality wise.
