So I got Stuck

So I high centered my truck the other day in the desert and reaffirmed that I hate getting stuck somewhere my winch won’t help me . I just bought a torch so I can build me a winch anchor (pull-pal).

So anyway I decided to try my air jack that I bought from Kirt at Cruiser outfitters. It worked awesome but I wanted to give some suggestions. I wandered around the desert for hours trying to find something to stuff under the wheels, I suggest carrying something, a 2x6 or something. I like those new plastic ramps that they have out now and will probably buy some in the near future. The biggest suggestion I would have is to get rid of your angled exhaust. Mine is angled and it made it difficult to hold the funnel on to it. The air kept leaking around the edges. It would only blow so far up and then I couldn't hold it up tight enough. I just finished blowing the jack up with my CO2 tank. Nothing a sawzall can’t take care of ;).

Anyway here is a pic for those that want to laugh.

Awesome. I sank the Explorer in some sand last summer and didn't have an xjack, I had to take turns with my hilift and hauling huge rocks to put under the wheels to get myself out, no fun. I've been thinking really hard about making my own set of sandladders - I'm thinking rectangles of angle iron with expanded metal welded in, daisy-chained together with some heavy chain links.

I really do want one of those xjacks, though.

Good thing you are resourceful and had the right tools to figure a way out of it. An exhaust jack is on my priority list of things to get.

years ago up in wyoming I got stuck out in the backwards without any trees to hook the winch to... I pulled my spare tire off and buried it 4 feet deep with the winch end... it worked just enough to pull me out of the hold I was in. the trick is to put the winch line thru the center and hook it to a bar on the backside then put the tire in the ground so that its standing up so when you pull its putting the whole tire against the ground between you and the tire...

A pull-pal would have been soooo much nicer!

That is nothing to be ashamed of. Hell, we have all done it and when most of us did it I bet we were not as well prepared as you were. I like you ideas and will have to keep them in the back of my mind.

can you use matrax as ramps? I know they can handle light bridging, but would they work, for example, to load your rig onto a trailer? (I wouldn't do that, I'm just curious what they can withstand)

No, they are not suitable for ramp use.

As for the Smittybuilt's, there are some comparison reviews out there on the two, long story short the Maxtrax win in every angle but price. Then again, its pretty cheap to reverse engineer stuff as a business model :D
