So I was out for a walk in the desert and found three of these:

Not the whole thing just the brass. There may have been more around these were just a couple feet apart from each other. They are almost black in color from being under the sun for so long. Not much on the internet about them other than this link and was wondering if anyone else knew anything. One guy said the "52" on it was the year and another said it was the lot number. I am right next to Edwards Air force Base so I assume it came from a plane. My house seems to be in there flight plan since I am constantly getting buzzed (mostly over a thousand feet up but a couple times I bet they were under 500).

So if anyone has any info I'm all ears.

That would be the 20mm that most of our fighters use. I've never seen anything that old but Dave is right manufactured at Lake City 1952 which means it was out there for a long time.

The stuff we use these days actually has a full lot number printed on them. The stamp on the bottom picture would only be seen on small arms anymore .50 cal and smaller.

Can't help with the cartridges, but I sure do miss working at Edwards! And really miss the Mojave desert. Just be careful walking around, plenty of abandoned mines throughout the area and not all are marked well!
