Something you could do is download some demos, give them a try and see what you like and then buy it.
I'll second Company of Heroes. I've only played the demo but it's good if you like WWII shooters. Brother's in Arms is another really good WWII shooter, there's some strategy involved in that one with real time flanking maneuvers. It's a lot of fun.
